10 Cloverfield Lane: Original Ending Revealed

"In the original script, Michelle escapes the shelter and is chased through the farmhouse by Howard, who still wants to “protect” her. She blinds him with bathroom cleaner, he tells her about his tragic life (dead wife, missing daughter, treacherous Nate, etc.), and then she shoots him in the kneecap and runs away. He ends the movie alive, entreating Michelle to “be careful.” Later, after traveling down empty roads and finding no one around to help her, she crests a hill and sees the Chicago skyline, smoldering and destroyed. No explanation is given. We don’t even know what she will do next, only that she now knows that Howard, for all his oddity, was correct. The final line in the script is, “She slowly pulls down the mask on the hazmat suit before taking a breath.”

Interesting! I think I would have preferred the original ending. The ending we got in the current film felt so out of place, too much like a video game, and even kind of felt forced.

Well, the thing about the ending we got is the "character arc" in plays for her character. We're shown/told that she's someone who quickly and easily flees whenever things get to be too much for her to handle, like her relationship with The Voice of Bradley Cooper.

Through the movie she fights her way through a (series of) problem(s) and at the end she's given a final choice between fleeing from her last confrontation (by going to Baton Rouge) or to keep on fighting by going to Houston where they are calling for help. She turns and goes to Houston.

.... Where I'm sure she'll encounter her character from the "The Thing" remake/sequel/prequel thing from a few years ago where at the end her character, similarly, flees from a concluded problem and heads for a presumed point of safety.

There were reshoots, that character arc could have been included in that. It really only get introduced in the beginning and during the scene where she tells the story of seeing the girl at the store. The payoff for the arc makes the ending work despite being a radical change in tone. It almost feels like the backstory for another story where she's the hero.

The ending was so terrible that it really brought down my opinion of the movie. Felt like some studio panel decided any subtlety in the ending was too much for audiences so they dumbed it down with that boss fight & crossroads scene. Spelling out everything about the aliens and everything about her character arc. The visual design of the alien was fantastic so I would have ended it when it first starts flying towards her.

Tragic that they didn't go with the original ending. Oh well, great first 90% of the movie.

I saw the movie yesterday and thought it was really good. Great direction and performences all around. I'm suprised that the movies soundtrack by Bear McCreary hasn't come up yet here.

I have to say that I can't remember a movie in the last years that had such an effective and involving score. Especially in the first 30 minutes, it felt like the score was almost like another character. Nowadays it sometimes seems like most movies have just simple underscoring that rarly stands out against all the other things in an audiotrack. So it was really nice to have a movie were the music actually was so front and center.

Bear is awesome. I know him from his work on the first season of Human Target, where his music added an old school cinematic flair to the action.... and was sorely missed in the 2nd lackluster season. That show had so much potential...
