“The Galileo Seven”—why those seven?

Six characters in search of an author. Five characters in search of an exit. Four characters in search of a way out of a Chula game. Seven characters in search of a way to get back to the ship. It's a grand theatrical tradition.
Critics call them mousetrap movies. My brother calls them isolation thrillers. But both they and he are right.
Think of SOUTHERN COMFORT, '82's THE THING, GHOST STORY, THE BLACK HOLE, OMEN 3, CAPRICORN ONE or just about any ALIEN movie in that series.
12 ANGRY Men is the odd film out in this respect; it's not the people that dwindle, but their guilty verdicts. For another more fitting ''little-Indian'' style film also with Robert Webber, there's THE DIRTY DOZEN.....or the Filthy 14 if you count the officers on the mission.

FIVE CAME BACK is cinema's worst all-time crime against spoiler alerts. But I digress.
The majority of third-year TOS episodes might as well be titled THREE BEAMED BACK UP.
