“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

CBS has actually come out and stated that aspects of STO are considered canon

Hell, they've even stated the storyline for the upcoming "Age of Discovery" STO content will be considered canon in the same fashion.

Uh, when and where? I don't recall them saying anything like that at all.

CBS official stance on canon is only what is seen on TV/movies. Not games movies or comics.

Cryptic is working with CBS and the DSC team to make sure their story fits in the show's story, but just like the DSC tie in novels and comics, it is not canon.

When did they retcon it to an "alternate timeline?"
My bad I was thinking of their relation to the novel'verse. The tie-in STO novel established it was an alternate timeline from the mainline Novel'verse.

But BillJ said it better then me. It's an interpretation.

CBS has actually come out and stated that aspects of STO are considered canon (as far as some of the stories that CBS had in Star Trek magazines) until/if they are contradicted by something else on Streaming/TV/Film. Hell, they've even stated the storyline for the upcoming "Age of Discovery" STO content will be considered canon in the same fashion.
This.

So - hopefully, whether we get "The Captain Worf Show" or the "Retired Jean-Luc Picard Show," it'll undo the awful canon that Star Trek: Online has laid down.

It's still not canon. That being said, I doubt that the show will affect STO in any meaningful way.

Yeah, they'll probably get the ships, uniforms and other visual stuff.

I'm sure STO will find a way to work in the story in some convoluted way.

does anyone feel that "Captain Worf" would have done any better than "Retired Captain Picard?"

The STO story is excellent.
It has its moments, but 90% of it is nonsensical and ridiculous and barely average as far as MMO storytelling goes -- a medium not exactly known for its quality of writing.

It isn't canon, it never was. It is simply their interpretation of where the 24th/25th century went. Just like Pocket Books novels.
Yup.

To STO's credit, I do think that it got better over time and there are some real gems in there (I loved everything with the Romulans), but the okay, mediocre and bad stuff is still in the majority.

This is mostly true, I suppose. The Romulan Republic stuff is definitely the best it has to offer, but it's pretty short. And "Mind Game" is easily the best of the bunch (And the best mission in the game.), but even that can be found better elsewhere. Heck, even SWTOR uses the same basic concept but to much greater dramatic effect.

Ultimately STO's shortfall is the delivery system. There really not much in the way of a cinematic experience at all. So what you end up with is basically like reading the dialog of a novel (Or having Trek actors read their characters' dialog) without the narrative.

You won't enjoy STO until you have played it in the German original. And by "original" I mean "Crappy Google Translater Translation" :D

Maybe this was already discussed in one of the 57 previous pages of this thread, but does anyone feel that "Captain Worf" would have done any better than "Retired Captain Picard?" I know Michael Dorn has been pushing to get his own Trek series for a number of years now.

Edit to add: Hopefully, whether we get "The Captain Worf Show" or the "Retired Jean-Luc Picard Show," it'll undo the awful canon that Star Trek: Online has laid down. If you think the writing in Discovery is bad, try a couple of missions from that game. Blargh.

No. Stewart is ten times the actor, Picard is ten times more popular and iconic a character, Worf shouldn't be a captain in the first place (his random inexplicable appearance in Nemesis is idiotic, rejoining Klingon society was a huge part of his arc and he's personally responsible for the existence of the new Klingon govt., so for him to just jump ship would be extremely dishonorable), and a Captain Worf show has no real hook beyond the character (it would almost certainly wind up just another straight exploration/combat show with nothing to differentiate it from the rest of the franchise). Picard in his twilight years, at least, is going someplace new and not just repeating TNG.

Oh. I've watched enough YT to know how bad it is.

In fact, while not German, in the guild I was in many moons ago, there was a fellow member from Montreal. She mostly played in English, but always install the French content for clarity purposes. So as a running gag she used to post clips and screens from various games in the guild forum.

She never failed to deliver the lolz.

I remember seriously considering asking Cryptic if they wanted me (I was like 15-ish when I played) to do free translating for new missions, but I didn't went through with it.... Unfortunately for the German STO community :D

Looking forward to this but as a novel fan, I know this is going to mess everything up.

Yeah the novels had some great plot threads going on. The current novelverse will most likely get the Star Wars EU treatment. Fingers crossed they keep the Vesta and Luna Classes and make them legit.
