“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

Like Rome

Like Rome

So...like Rome. As I said, Rome's ratings were going up, but was cancelled due to financial reasons. Had HBO toughed it out, they could've had another huge hit on their hands. Would it be as big as GoT? Well,, GoT has dragons, The Wall, flaming swords, etc, etc.

But beyond that, Rome already did most of what GoT has done. As I said, love GoT, but as a history buff, I also love Rome.

Well, I never said anything about Rome because I've never seen it. But, I did say that GoT didn't bring anything new to the table. Conversely, I'm sure that Rome didn't either! It can still be a great show though. Being great and/or being a mainstream hit doesn't depend on bringing something new to the table.

Maybe Rome needed to add dragons? Kidding!

LOL! Maybe, indeed! :bolian:

Well, if you love GoT and like historical shows, I'd say give Rome a try. While it was an expensive show, there are moments when you can see the limitations of the time, primarily in any large military scenes, but it's still imminently enjoyable, IMO. And there's only two seasons, so it's not a huge time investment, and they got to give the series an ending on top of it.

A particularly favorite scene of mine:

Haven't you heard? Visuals matter.

They do matter, to a degree. But the issues with Nemesis don't hang on Hardy's looks. Much like the core issues of Discovery aren't that it doesn't look like TOS.

Great writing helps me forgive a lot of things. Something which neither Nemesis or Discovery have.

I have my doubts.

Thanks.
I remember watching it on PBS (Masterpiece Theater) here in the US, but it was quite awhile ago. :)

Maybe this was already discussed in one of the 57 previous pages of this thread, but does anyone feel that "Captain Worf" would have done any better than "Retired Captain Picard?" I know Michael Dorn has been pushing to get his own Trek series for a number of years now.

Edit to add: Hopefully, whether we get "The Captain Worf Show" or the "Retired Jean-Luc Picard Show," it'll undo the awful canon that Star Trek: Online has laid down. If you think the writing in Discovery is bad, try a couple of missions from that game. Blargh.

When did they retcon it to an "alternate timeline?" My impression of STO was that they were religious about the fact that it takes place in the prime timeline a couple of decades after Nemesis, to the point that when Star Trek 2009 dropped, they even incorporated the Hobus Incident (and then proceeded to blame the whole thing on Sela's shenanigans).

I'm not sure how we can call their story "excellent" when it boils down to "every race and every starship that ever existed is now vying for conquest of the galaxy, regardless of alternate timeline or point in time at which it existed."

It isn't canon, it never was. It is simply their interpretation of where the 24th/25th century went. Just like Pocket Books novels.

CBS has actually come out and stated that aspects of STO are considered canon (as far as some of the stories that CBS had in Star Trek magazines) until/if they are contradicted by something else on Streaming/TV/Film. Hell, they've even stated the storyline for the upcoming "Age of Discovery" STO content will be considered canon in the same fashion.
