“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

I must admit I’d love to see a Stargazer-era Picard. His “origin story” if you will.

Picard taking command of the bridge, learning to become a captain. To me that’s a more compelling idea than Picard’s life after Nemesis.

That being said, we’ve already seen the Stargazer and we know what she looked like thanks to “The Battle” and the ship and aesthetic, etc. would inevitably be changed for modern TV. So maybe going forward to a time when aesthetic trends and conventions don’t apply (because they’ve not been invented or seen yet) is the way forward (pun intended).

Maybe if we'd stop complaining as a fanbase about "aesthetics" and "TEH CANNON!!1!" and things of that nature, we'd get a really good show (like what you've proposed here) instead of something that is a third-tier choice because they are terrified of fan outrage.

I tend to agree with this. Despite the constant clamoring for nothing "New" and "innovative" the reactions, even if it is a vocal minority (keyword: vocal), the criticisms come across as fear of any changes.

It's the old "Star Wars New Trilogy" effect...

1. "The Prequels were awful! They need to get back to the Star Wars basics!!!"
2. "TFA was too familiar! It ripped off ANH and was awful and sucked!!!"
3. "TLJ was a slap in the face for completely going against all expectations or formulas familiar to the franchise! AWFUL!!! RIOT RIOT!!!"

Translation: If it's not exactly how I would have done it...it sucks.

What fascinates me is how many fan productions (art, fiction, films) do many of the things that current Star Trek production till tap in to, such as exploring more of Kirk and Spock dynamics, exploring Starfleet at war, etc. And yet, the things that fans point at and celebrate other fans doing are the things productions do and get mocked for. So, yeah, there is no winning.

You're talking about a group of people who get so chagrined that they didn't get what they wanted from an entertainment property, that they take it out personally on the production team and writers. It becomes personal to them...like the writers sat around and TRIED to ruin their specific childhood dreams.

So, from this perspective, nothing should come as a particular surprise.

Oh, it isn't surprising. Quite the opposite. I am deeply fascinated and continue to discover interesting examples of individuals and the pre-conceived notions that come with them. Often times the term "should" is applied to TV shows and what they ought to be, thus leading to disappointment.

Back to the subject though...I do think that a show that revealed or wove in the history of the Stargazer would be fantastic. But not in a "Young Indiana Jones" kind of way. Maybe a 50/50 story where there's a mystery or incident that "current Picard" is dealing with that links back to his earlier days aboard the Stargazer. That could have tremendous potential. Allow "current Picard" to be a high-ranking senior officer or official (which is far more realistic than action / adventure / space explorer Picard) and have a new, young actor representing Picard back 40+ years aboard his first command.

Could be a lot of fun.

I see where you’re coming from (and I largely agree). To be honest I’d have had no problem with the new look of dsc had the story been better (which I know is a personal issue of preference on my part but I didn’t like the story in dsc s1).

But... I think there’s a lot to be said for keeping as closely as possible to the established look and feel of a fictional time (even set in the future). Look at Star Wars for what I mean.
I don’t think tptb are terrified of fan outrage at all. They’re making an animated comedy show - so they’re not that worried about what the fans think as I see things. I think they want to get as far away from previous (let’s face it, failed) Star Trek - that is, TOS and ENT which were both cancelled - and they’re hoping that the “get over it” brigade will silence or shout down anyone who has truly invested in the established look and aesthetic of particular eras of Star Trek.

Dsc looks wrong for the era. I can live with it if they churn out some decent stories in s2. The same applies to the Picard show when it appears. If the stories are compelling they could make it all steampunk and I wouldn’t care. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the writing improves going forward.

And there’s always Trek and Morty to look forward to!

Have you ever read the anthology collection "Mere Anarchy" from the novel verse? That's a cool "across the TOS eras" story. Something like that would be epic.
