“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

...if the show has to be 25% different, I wonder what a Galaxy Class starship would look like in the new universe. It seems to me that Trek likes kewlness over realness. Part of what made the Refit and the Galaxy great, I think, is that they didn't go just for kewl. So many later ships it's harder for me to buy as real. I wonder how they'll reinterpret the Enterprise-D, as I'm sure it, or something similar, will appear in some fashion on the show, at some point.

Arpy, the Enterprise-D is thirty years old. We feel her day is over. :D

Seriously, though, I doubt we will see anything like the D in the new Picard series. At least not associated with Picard. There might still be Galaxy-class ships in service, but we might not see them. Especially if the 'families aboard ship' thing was abandoned as a bad idea. And it was a bad idea, because who wants babies and small children subjected to the frontier of absolute unknowns?

No idea. I didn’t say that. In fact my original comment was about different flavours and a bit of a pun.
Here is Refuge's response to your previous post:
I still can't wrap my head around packaging a show representing diversity to a targeted paying market. The non Access or Netflix crowd, well you lot that used to be the given Trek audience, pay up or shut up. You'd think diversity would be a message to get out to even poorer people.
Your response to Refuge's post above:
Selling a message to those who already believe in it is the symptom of this age.
I interpreted this to mean that you were saying that the "poorer" people mentioned in Refuge's post were already sold on the value of diversity.. Thus my response:
Not sure of what makes you think that "poor" people (generally) believe in diversity.
If I misinterpreted your post above, please let me know how and what you really meant.

CBS

The whole design is an unbalanced mess.

It's space? I think the vast expansive saucer is what I, and many, like best about it. It "defies gravity" and creates about the coolest fuckin' office space you'd want to work in. That's a future I'd hope actually came about, more than the Perpetual Cold War Anti-Klingon Battleship that was my beloved Connie.

Also, extremely ugly.

I respectfully disagree?

I thought the whole 25% thing was a myth that's already been debunked?

I hadn't heard. So is that what was meant up-thread about DSC being different for "merchandising" purposes? That it could have absolutely looked 100% (or whatever) like previous Trek, if they wanted it to?

Since when has that stopped the Internet?

WE ARE THE INTERNET. RESISTANCE IS... Not everyone is up to date on the latest news in every subject. Forgive us our trespasses and we'll reciprocate.

:shifty:....

I think it'll show as a nod to the fans at least. Why should the Connie shown up on DSC? We'll see it.

Also, the families on board is much closer to reality, I think, than what we typically see on Trek. Space is just that. Ships probably go out whole multi-year missions and maybe only ever come across plant-life, at best. The Galaxy resonated in part with people because it didn't suggest the typical Hornblower vs. the Martians trope.

Well....maybe so. There was all that charting of gaseous anomalies.

Intitally I was commenting on flavours, with a pun on the ‘diverse’ stuff used marketing by the show.
Refuge points out it’s a gated show, ‘poor’ people in essence can’t afford to watch it.
I point out it’s preaching to the converted. I.e only Star Trek fans will pay to watch it, they are likely already fairly ok with diversity.

After that, I tenc to believe ‘poor’ people tend to be more diverse in my experience, (I.e living on housing Estates my whole life...) because we tend to work shoulder to shoulder with ‘minorities’.

While we know it doesn't have to be changed for legal reasons, there's a clear deliberate push to redesign everything. While it would be possible The Picard Show will return to the classic TNG/TNGmovie look, I expect similar re-imagining to Discovery.

I think it will be less noticeable. Because it’s not a prequel.

Is a denial a debunking?

It hasn't been debunked, nor proven right or wrong. The facts are the following:
  • John Eaves was told to make it different, and he assumed (or was told) "25% different"
  • CBS insists they own "all" of Star Trek and could have used the original Enterprise if they wanted
Which leaves only one logical conclusion possible:
They changed the Enterprise to sell the merchandise seperatedly.

Like, see how many models of the Disco-prise have already popped up. They are all sold under the Disco-license, not the TOS-one. Ergo: A whole lot of new licensing money for CBS.

So it turned out to be kinda' true, even though the 25%-figure itself is a common designer myth (really what does "25% different" even mean?).

As for the Picard show:
It won't have any problems with that "25% rule". They aren't going to use the Galaxy class (or Enterprise E) anyway, they will introduce new starships, and Picard will wear a new uniform anyway, so those will be different (for NEW merchandise) right from the beginning anyway.

Whatever will appear on this show, it will be custom made for this show. And everything that is created new, will be a "new" design, and thus merchandise licenses of it can be sold as "new" as well. If any of the "original" designs appears - like the Ent-D, or the TNG era communicator - it will be as an Easter egg in the background (like the original spacedock that appeared in DIS).

But will the new Picard series be set in the Discovery universe because of the copyright issues between Paramount and CBS ?
Or will the Picard series just have an 'updated' look like they have done on Discovery ?

Paramount has nothing to do with this.

Discovery and the rest of the TV shows are in the same universe
