“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

It seems season 1 of any Star Trek TV show has had problems finding its way. That's why I think season 2 of DSC will be better than season 1 of the Picard show (I'm encouraged by the previews and news coming out of DSC season 2). However, once both get going, it's possible that the Picard show could eclipse DSC in quality.

That's a good question. These new shows are not dictated by ratings per se but based on subscriptions. Normally a second series would be presented based on the success the first series generated, and to judge the first series success there's some longevity to it like 4 to 5 seasons under its belt. Are the subscriptions large enough to warrant a second series or the CBS analytics folks are not pleased with what they have and the Picard series is a stunt in an attempt to draw in on what's left of the Star Trek fan base?

Either way this is not good for Discovery because it deserves its own time to crawl and then walk (Like most shows), while CBS access is thinking short term instead of long term. It's Deep Space Nine all over again when TNG left the small screen, Discovery is a show which certain people wants to see, but what CBS wants is a show that everyone wants to see.
How is more Star Trek not good for ST: D? I don't get the logic. These shows are effectively on the SAME service. People can watch and contribute to the success of BOTH shows; so again I don't get the 'competition aspect in this at all since BOTH shows wilkl be part of the Star Trek franchise.

If anything CBSAA will probably not be airing these shows first run at the same time (IE they'll run ST: D from Jan - April, and then the Picard show April - July) and the plan is to MAINTAIN fan interest in Star Trek with new Star Trek content year round - just not putting it all in one show's basket as it were.

The Picard show should give extra-energy to Discovery I think. We're talking mini-series so it shouldn't overshadow it.

I'm assuming the shows will all be shot in the same studios using the same pool of props, makeup and whatnot. So anything bringing new things to CBS-Trek in turn helps Discovery since it diversifies the pool they can draw from.

Well, I like TMP (esp the Director's Cut) well enough, so if Picardverse is as different, I'm going to enjoy it for what it's worth, as well. I mean, the TNG movies weren't the series anyway, so it's not like I don't have experience at this.

...if the show has to be 25% different, I wonder what a Galaxy Class starship would look like in the new universe. It seems to me that Trek likes kewlness over realness. Part of what made the Refit and the Galaxy great, I think, is that they didn't go just for kewl. So many later ships it's harder for me to buy as real. I wonder how they'll reinterpret the Enterprise-D, as I'm sure it, or something similar, will appear in some fashion on the show, at some point.

Nacelles that are 25% longer.

Maybe I misunderstood. Who owns the rights to th Picardverse? The people who can make a series continuing pre-DSC Trek or those who can’t?

Also, longer nacelles are not a good thing. The Galaxy has it right: advanced tech is more compact (in proportion to the entire ship) and superior.

The whole design is an unbalanced mess.

So, on August 3rd CBS registered the trademark Star Trek: Reliant
