“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

He's currently starring in the new V-WARS tv series, now in production. (It's a post-apocalyptic vampire show based the books and comics by Jonathan Maberry.) Don't know if that precludes him from guesting on DISCO or not.

The chance for an action figure with his bestie? I wouldn’t be surprised if they retcon Generations to have him be Robert.
‘Robert! I thought you died in the fire!’
‘No ducks, at the last minute Rene and I managed to beam out to Gascony! Isn’t it strange. Amnesia of course. Rene! Come say hello to your Uncle...He’s grown up a bit hitchhiking across France in a century with no cars....’
*in walks Seth McFarlane*
‘Hi Unc’ *aside* this is really gonna fuck with the The Orville vs DSC fans....dance number!’

Oops. I thought you were talking about Ian Somerhalder from VAMPIRE DIARIES. ("ian or sommat"). Never mind. :)

I hope it not only eclipses Discovery but I hope It helps in lower Discoverys ratings so that its canceled after the 3rd season at the most.

Seconded. I may not love every aspect of Discovery but wishing it ill is not the way to improve upon Trek.

Yeah, I don't really understand why people would wish a show to be cancelled if other people are enjoying it.

The world is full of shows that I'm not interested in and never watch, but it's no skin off my nose.if other people watch them. Nor does it matter to me if they're cancelled or not. Why root for a show to be cancelled just because it doesn't appeal to me? I can always watch something else.

There's five zillion channels on TV now, so there's something for everyone.

I hope it eclipses all of television to the point all other shows and movies are cancelled forever and all our channels and digital outlets show only The Picard Show on loop and the stars on the American flag are replaced with Picard heads.

This comment represents the worst aspects of the fandom for me. Petty and childish. Just because we are getting a picard show, doesn't mean we are going to get the trek series you want. Doesn't matter how much foot stamping you do.

No one says you have to like Discovery, but at least be an adult about it.

Snicker. Nice use of sarcasm :)

I'd rather see "Discovery" actually improve than to get worse. Have any studies been done on the viewers to find out what made them stick to the show or why they left?

That's an extremely crappy and self-centered thing to say.

Don't watch, don't subscribe, bitch and moan all you want...but don't be so narrow and self-absorbed that you'd rather see it fail. There are a lot of people who enjoy it...a lot more that those who don't.

I'm a HUGE TNG fan, but that doesn't mean I'll like what they have Picard doing in a future TNG spin off. Every show is different, but if it's headed up by the same group that runs Discovery, that's points against it not for it. But, who knows until we see it.
That's a good question. These new shows are not dictated by ratings per se but based on subscriptions. Normally a second series would be presented based on the success the first series generated, and to judge the first series success there's some longevity to it like 4 to 5 seasons under its belt. Are the subscriptions large enough to warrant a second series or the CBS analytics folks are not pleased with what they have and the Picard series is a stunt in an attempt to draw in on what's left of the Star Trek fan base?

Either way this is not good for Discovery because it deserves its own time to crawl and then walk (Like most shows), while CBS access is thinking short term instead of long term. It's Deep Space Nine all over again when TNG left the small screen, Discovery is a show which certain people wants to see, but what CBS wants is a show that everyone wants to see.

Both. A larger part of the market share is what companies always want. This is not bad for DSC, any more than Jessica Jones was bad for Daredevil. This is business now.

Here in America, our first exposure to THE AVENGERS was the Diana Rigg years, at which point the show had already been running in the UK for several years.

And, yes, it would not be trickery to tell potential new viewers that the show hits its peak when Emma Peel shows up in the fourth season.

You just blew my mind. I have never watched the show but I have wanted to and I didn't know it took that long for her to get on the show. To be fair I didn't even know it lasted that long either. What's this stuff about season 1 being lost? Did it go up in that fire or whatever it was were many early Doctor Who episodes were lost forever?

Netflix never considered Daredevil as a flagship to start a streaming series, House of Cards was. And even that series had a chance to crawl and then walk before the company fully launch another stream of original series by the company. Convention is to allow a new series to grow, and not chop its knees from under it, and then launch another show which will carry the same surname. The Netflix Marvel series was sold as a package, I doubt this was the case at CBS because they would have mentioned it while promoting Discovery.

This is shaping up to be another civil war between Trekfans (Deep Space Nine vs. Voyager) after TNG went off the air. It doesn't show a lot of confidence in the Studio for Discovery when they trump up another series based upon a Trek Legend. Whatever some people are claiming most viewers love DISCO, CBS-- based on their rapid purging-- is implying this is not true. They're breaking the purse to dip into that old well again to something that was widely considered was successful. fireproof78, come on, it's not as if CBS granted a spin-off for DISCO, for whatever it's worth--it appears CBS is going back to the future.

Sometimes when people say they wish a show would be canned I don't always know if they are being literal or if that is just a a figure of speech to show how much they didn't like it.
