IIRC, there was an Uncle Buck TV series back in the early 90s, not too long after the movie had came out. (Though, I think, before Candy's death.)

Looking it up on Wikipedia and... Yeah, it lasted for one season -22 episodes- and was... YEEESSH. Centered around Buck getting the children following their parents dying in a car accident!!

Buck was played by comedian Kevin Meaney.

I remember this show existing but I don't remember ever watching it.

Odd one for a tv adaptation. It's a nice, fun, family film but I don't think its entered the public imagination the way that, say, Home Alone has. The basic idea of a slobbish uncle looking after his nieces and nephews is readily adaptable but I wouldn't have thought that the name carries all that much recognition factor.

Big John will indeed be a hard act to follow.

If it does happen, I will give it a chance, but yeah, replacing John Candy? To me he is Uncle Buck. It's his mannerisms, his demeanor, and you can tell how much he loves his family, and that the actions he takes are well intentioned. That was the charm of the movie. So if they go through with it, they better have one hell of a casting director.

I actually just recently watched that movie - it was on AMC when I was flipping channels and it took about two minutes to get absorbed in it. John Hughes and John Candy could never be replaced. They achieved a great balance of warmth and humor without being sappy, and I don't think any reboot or offshoot or whatever could come close. And that was, like, 1989. Why now? Sounds like they might want to just slap 'Uncle Buck' on something, but I could be wrong.

You could say the same of the two tv versions of Fargo. Though I'd be surprised if this come anywhere close to the brilliance of this year's Fargo adaptation.

Mike Epps To Topline ABC Comedy Pilot ‘Uncle Buck’

Interesting. I'm curious to see how they'll play it. The way Candy played it, Buck was a fun loving man who wanted to be "free", but dearly loved his brother and his brother's family.

The only movies I've seen Mike Epps in were minor roles without much screen time, or so long ago that his performance is too fuzzy to remember. Still, if he can pull this off, I wish it much success.
