‘Star Trek 3′: Roberto Orci Wants to Direct

Great. The movies he worked on made $1.057 billion. Why wouldn't Paramount give him the job?

RAMA

I hope Orci keeps his take-no-prisoners, suffer no fools attitude towards fans. Remember, if you do not like his film, he is totally justified in telling you to "fuck off" as has been established in this thread. For the record, I think Paramount made a great choice. Interesting days lie ahead.

Deadline now seems to be confirming:

UPDATE: Orci to Helm 'Star Trek 3'

UPDATED, 7:09 PM: Looks like Roberto Orci indeed is set to direct the next Star Trek pic — as we reported exclusively last week.

PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE, May 9: After an aggressive lobbying campaign, Roberto Orci has emerged as the clear frontrunner to replace JJ Abrams and direct Paramount‘s third installment of the Star Trek series. I’m hearing they’re in talks. This comes after Orci parted company with longtime partner Alex Kurtzman (though they continue on TV projects). This would amount to another first-time director taking on a massive project, which has been hit (Snow White And The Huntsman) and miss (Transcendence, John Carter, 47 Ronin).

Suck it, haters.

This is going to be the most interesting lead up to a Trek film ever.

We actually have a director who likes to engage in inane squabbles on Internet boards.

Let us all do our best to discourage politeness and encourage his frank, honest views to flourish.

I'm on board with that. :borg:

For reals though, idiocy or not, I'll say this for Orci's online flaps: they show that he has some real fire in the proverbial belly. He obviously does care what the fans think, whether or not he likes what they think, so he's likely not a guy who'll be content with having "Made a billion bucks for Paramount" chiseled on his headstone. Just how it motivates him remains to be seen, but I certainly do believe he'll really give it his all.

Oof. I liked both Star Trek and a decent chunk of Into Darkness, but putting the flagship piece of the 50th anniversary in the hands of a guy who hasn't directed a single thing in his life ... ugh. Not feeling it.

I figure if J.J. has confidence in him, then he's got to have something working in his favor.

Agree.

Honestly, he's passionate guy. I do believe he will do the best he can. As a dyed-in-the-wool Trek fan from way back, this is a dream come true for him. No fan has ever risen to the absolute top of this billion dollar franchise. I sincerely hope he is up to the challenge.

More likely Abrams and Paramount don't care and are doing Trek 3 to merely satisfy contractual obligations and maybe get some tax credits (aka ST:Nemesis).

I wouldn't be surprised if Paramount has a new creative team secretly working on a reboot (aka what Sony did for the Spider-man franchise)

Who needs quality and integrity when you have CGI, a million dollar marketing campaign, Xplosions!!!, T&A, and a foreign market who will pretty much watch any American movie with Xplosions!!!

From what I read of Orci, he sounds like a guy with self-esteem issues. He certainly is not as obtuse as Michael Bay. I really doubt he can handle the pressure of a multi-million dollar film production.

Something tells me—suggestions that his Star Wars commitments mean he won't have time to the contrary—that J.J. is going to be standing right behind the director's chair for most of this.

...

Well, that certainly was unnecessary. Please don't let me see it in this forum again.

Congrats to those that think that Orci directing is a good idea. I wish I was as enthusiastic:

The template for this particular iteration of Trek is well established. That's why I basically have no objection to letting this phase of Trek play itself out. I would not mind having the three blockbuster-style Trek films in its long history.

Once this take on Trek is no longer profitable, Trek will remake itself into whatever form is in fashion. That's just the way it has always been.

We should be grateful that the format is so malleable. Perhaps we will look back at this time years hence and marvel at how Trek was adapted by some into a summer blockbuster mode.

What you call malleable, I call a globally recognized brand name you can attach to any piece of garbage and market the hell out of (*cough* Transformers *cough*). ST isn't just dead. It's a zombified corpse dancing for your amusement.
