    RPG Recruitment Thread

(On a black background, white text is displayed: "http://jerusalem.rpgs-r.us/ - USS Jerusalem JOIN TODAY" before fading to show a Starfleet officer, a human male with brown hair and hazel eyes, wearing command red with the rank pips of a Captain.) I'm Captain John Williams, CO of the USS...

    RPG Recruitment Thread

The USS Jakarta is a new Akira-class starship, still under construction at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards over Mars; it's already attached to Task Force 47-B, "The Minutemen", a part of Obsidian Fleet. The Jakarta has been modified to suit the specialized requirements of her ongoing mission: To...

    Warp-Capable, Single-Pilot Fighter Craft?

Just for the pilots and commanders, I think.

Captain Kirk and the HMS Truculent - An Alternative Reality Story

I don't usually go for alt-universe stories...But this is, well, so excellent as to be difficult to describe.

    Starfleet Academy and Clearing

Yes, it's a very British concept.

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

Another point where I think I tripped myself up with my tongue. I should really be clearer. I see First Contact as both an event and a process. There's the event of first contact (which should indeed be a happy occasion, if mostly in hindsight)...And then follows the process of first contact...

    Text-based simming -- thoughts & comments?

Nick: AOL RPGs had a very weird dynamic, from my remembrance. Very toxic. I would recommend trying to find a nice, small independent sim if you're ever interested these days. From my own experience, the BS factor has (even in a good number of fleets) been cut down a good bit - simply because...

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

...I'm just going to say that there are plenty of points in this thread where Neozeks expresses my thinking better than I do, his last post being a great example. WTF is up with that?:)

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

Ow, I'm confused as to what I should be responding to.:) I did notice the thing about 'What if the locals have their own protocols?', though, and in lieu of blinking confusedly will try to answer that. I think that the Federation, because bureaucracy tends to fall into this trap even when...

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

Cepstrum: Good questions. I'll try for answers. 1. The way I see it, the Ferengi (for example) aren't going to range over the entirety of even the Alpha Quadrant. There's a reason, after all, that first contact wasn't made with them until TNG, in-universe. Basically, besides the UFP, I only...

Things in Trek that make me go "gah"!

Not bad, not bad. But seriously, is my conclusion really wrong, DevilEyes? Really off base? I forget what the stats are for interracial relationships (and Wikipedia isn't being helpful), but they're not exactly high, even accounting for how relatively recently they've become socially...

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

Have we seen the holocom devices used remotely like that? I seem to recall them being strictly one-to-one devices. As a big part of this conference would be decisionmaking re the public revelation of extraterrestrial life, they need to be capable of many to many comms...It might be better if...

    Budgets, production costs, and salaries

Whoa, this ep went waaaay over, then. I know pilots are expensive, but why so expensive?

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

Did you miss the part about not wanting to freak out the locals?:) Transporter use around them (to say nothing of on them) would freak out most people who hadn't heard of it.

    Budgets, production costs, and salaries

Just so people don't have to do it themselves: http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm says that $1 in 1965 dollars is worth $6.93 in 2010 dollars, so the $12,000 over the stated budget equals $83,115.43 in today's terms. That $215,644 for "total costs excluding overages" equals to...

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

In the event there are no countries, my head explodes.:) The point about all the squabbles that would crop up with a HOS/HOG-level meeting are non-trivial, but the problem is that there are decisions that need to be made with zero leaks, more or less right then, with no ability to wait for...

A pitiful attempt at a short story

Unfortunately, that's all I have - like I stated at the beginning, this was "write, to think of something else, anything other than the thoughts in my head, until it feels done", not something I have any plan to (or idea how to) turn into something bigger. Sharing came basically on a whim; I...

A pitiful attempt at a short story

[Okay, folks. I am, for no reason I can discern, very depressed today. Hence, I'm writing to keep away the darkness. I mention this because this might turn out to be incredibly dark. I'm writing stream of consciousness, too, especially meriting the warning...As well as a warning that this will...

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

I think we need to make a division here between "Contact" and "Interaction". I absolutely do not see the Federation allowing, to use Earth as the example, the P5 (the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council) to be the only governments who know of the existence of extraterrestrial life...

Worldbuilding: New member integration in the UFP

I don't see SF intervening to sabotage people. Entirely possible, but this is why the Federation comes back and says "Hi!" every so often. Excellent point. This is why the contact team, as a personnel matter, is trained to limit as much as possible the chances for that happening, IMHO...
