It was never about having an AI character, it was about having a non-human/outsider. It's a pretty standard sci-fi trope, and we've seen it done in every iteration of television Trek. Yes, in TNG and Voyager it was an AI, but it in TOS it was Spock, in DS9 it was Odo and in ENT in T'Paul.

I can't imagine the DVD set being cheaper than All Access. Assuming a 10-13 episode run, at most you'd have to subscribe for 3, maybe 4, months at $6 a month.

I think this is really really unlikely. It's not like CBS is putting the new series on All Access because it thinks its the best way for the series to make money, and maybe a better way will come around. It's the opposite. CBS views the new series as the best way to launch All Access.
