The Maple Leaf Lounge

At most, Canada could support two other teams in the NHL. An extra one in Toronto and one in Quebec City. But neither would be a sure thing.
Be a cold day in hell before the leafs allow another team in Toronto.

Too much money is being.

Our chiropractor is leaf’s fan and it can be cheaper to drive to Ottawa and see the play the Senators and stay over night that see them play in Toronto.

Yeah, and money's also why certain cities simply would not be able to support a team. It takes money to operate a major league stadium for instance. Meanwhile my city's been tearing up the downtown core in order to build a new arena to replace the aging one we have, and there's been just so much politics going around about it, and that's only at the OHL level. I'd hate to see what the NHL level would do to it.

My city is going through exactly the same thing and the expected cost is north of $150 mil.

Though if last as long as the current one that will be works out to a bit over $2mil a year.

My wife also has a connection to the existing one. Back in 2004 she received a civic award for her work lobbying for improvements to the accessibility seating areas.

True. I was simply talking about what would be sustainable, not what would be likely.

My city's in a pretty big mess as they've expropriated the land and buildings the land sits on in order to build the new arena. Meanwhile the hockey and basketball team owner wanted to build the arena on the outskirts and is in a pretty big beef with the city over the arena's location, and said he might move both teams elsewhere if he doesn't get what he wants. Our city though has taken to not really listening and just forging ahead with their own plans, ie the downtown location and meanwhile this has been ongoing for roughly 15 years.

Team owner's being rock-brained...

Many would agree with you, and surprisingly, he still plans on building an entertainment hub of his own (wants an arena and a casino), the land being close to the city dump, which has lead it to becoming a running joke. The location of the arena has been long debated for at least 10 or more years.

Yeah, that didn't last long with Hoekstra. Honestly, it's kind of lame how repetitive they've become. They're like bullies in a schoolyard who think it's fun to taunt, but can't find anything new to taunt. It's all stale. And It's become quite clear that they have no intention to negotiate. They keep stalling and taunting, and this is quite clearly part of their tactic as Canadian officials head to Washington for trade negotiations. Hoekstra thinks it would be an interesting discussion for the Prime Minister and President to have, but make no mistake, there's no discussion to be had, full stop. Hoekstra must be naive to think we'd even entertain the idea.

And we know what the President's views are and what he wants as he has made this abundantly clear over the last two years. Yet nobody seems to take into account what we need as a Country.

Here's an article to give more backstory to Hoekstra's words.

QUEBEC — The U.S. ambassador to Canada is making no apologies for re-posting U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest 51st state taunt and thinks it would be an interesting discussion to have.

Arriving for a meeting with Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette Wednesday, Peter Hoekstra said he represents the president and his job is to promote his views.

“I’ve said that ever since I’ve been here (as ambassador),” Hoekstra told reporters arriving at the premier’s office. “That’s a great discussion (the 51st state) for the president and the prime minister to have.

“They will set that policy. I have no instructions on the 51st state. If the president and the prime minister want to have that discussion they can have that discussion.”

Thing is there's no thought in it.

hoekstra's just parotting trump, and trump is frequently posting what some-one else has written.

and op-ed in today's Toronto Star describes trump's cabinet as "a cosmically peculiar collection of grifters and Fox personalities and toadies."

I think we can extend that definition to pretty much anyone he's appointed to a position.

Yeah, which is why we likely won't be reaching a trade deal via this current administration. I think it's less that they don't understand, but that they simply don't want to, and you can start to see that as early as when Trump was voted in on his second term and started the 51st State rhetoric. They just want to be griefers. They've done nothing but grift us from the start, and anytime we're close to possible trade discussions, they go and dump more fuel on the fire. This is all on them.

That's because "sorry" isn't in this administration's vocabulary.

That’s a great discussion (the 51st state) for the president and the prime minister to have.

No, it truly isn't. A discussion about why their ambassador has been expelled from our country? Now that would be a great discussion for the president and the prime minister to have. (Although note that Carney has already confirmed that they're not planning to expel him.)

I just kinda want to go back to simpler days, back when I didn't even know what the name of the US ambassador to Canada was.

diplomatic expulsions are generally tit for tat so hoekstra was sent packing the same would happen the Canadian ambassador in Washington.

and that's before the petty vindictiveness of trump was an issue.

now he'd find a way to hit use with more tariffs.

I know. It’s more of a fantasy than anything. Carney’s high road was objectively the right approach. But these idiots skate through life doing idiot things, and everything always works out just fine for them. Sometimes just I want there to be consequences.

I’ve never seen an episode of the original show… although I have seen people mention it online (possibly here?), so I know the general format, and have watched the theme song on YouTube. But I have no nostalgia for the show, and the premise seems kind of dated, so there doesn’t seem to be much that would entice me to watch it. Especially since it sounds like it will be on Crave, and therefore involve a $20/month subscription (or whatever it is at by the time this finally airs.)

Although I do think it would be funny if they did some “dark and gritty” serialized streaming reboot version.

Especially not when it's all being used as a put-down. Discussions don't begin with put-downs, they only begin when the aggressor is well and truly ready to listen to the complaints one has, which unfortunately won't happen anytime soon. Instead this feels like they decide it's a good discussion to have because it's the outcome they want, not because it benefits any of us.

I know what you mean. It's just so frustrating seeing them not have any consequences, especially when so many people are suffering through all this. Sometimes it's difficult to find the right balance between objective fantasy and hope, like for instance the hope that something will eventually catch up with him into something that he can't possibly weasel his way out of.

It's a rare thing to actually see an American actually get our point of view, but here we go. I've watched a few of Large Man Abroad's videos, but this one hit in a way some of his others haven't.
