News Starfleet Academy Nielsen Ratings

Interesting piece in Deadline last week about Netflix's apparent strategy to push viewers toward their ad-supported tier - essentially reinventing the old broadcast TV business model for streaming.
I was amazed to learn about the apparent enormous success of Pluto TV recently, when as far as I can tell it's basically a worse version of old broadcast TV (worse in that the ad breaks tend to occur randomly, rather than lining up with the intended points in an episode).

Nevertheless I wound up leaving it on and having Moesha, of all things, playing in the background all day and it's amazing how comforting it was to just be back to having something on that I was half-watching, like the old days. You can see how it's going to expand as a business model.

Why I take the same $20 and just cycle through the streamers, month or 2, cancel, move on to the next one. Usually timed for series I want to watch. Had P+ for 2 months for SA ( ugh.. want my money back) and will cycle around back to them when SNW eventually pops up. Ad Free.. I dispise commercials, If i'm paying money for your stuff, don't use ads.

This isn't my experience of the service. Tubi and other ad-sponsored streamers, yes, I've had this, but PlutoTV tends to do a good job of putting the ad breaks where they belong.

But that isn't relevant to today. £7.99 and Paramount shows me no ads in the middle of an episode and the ad they show before it starts is for a new show on their service which is plastered on the splash page before I even get to what I want to watch.

Even an extremely popular show can make advertisers no money.

My understanding is that non ad-supported viewership isn't what Nielsen is meant to track. The streamers know what's being streamed on their services, for how long, and by what accounts.

What they don't have is independent validation for advertisers (if you're interested, Nielsen's website pitches their services to potential customers). A significant part of Nielsen's business involves validating campaigns for companies that have purchased ads.

More granular data (who's actually in the room, are they paying attention, etc.) is also a job for analytics, but I haven't seen anything about where and how that data is collected (presumably not by Nielsen) or actually used.

Giant Freaking Robot literally openly acknowledged that they are seeking writers who specifically “must hate Starfleet Academy”. They have given up any pretense of being an unbiased news source and thus nothing they say should be taken seriously. Funny man Mike Stoklasa quoting “a friend” is not a credible source.

It got noticed and went viral, re-reported by a bunch of other media, including some hatemonger sites. But I wouldn't say Mike is anti-nuTrek particularly, he liked some of it. As for the reliability of his source, who knows. It does seem the Internet has gone mad over a throwaway comment.

Yeah, we knew it had come from the RLM interview.
