The General Anime Thread!

Just saw an announcement this morning that Sunrise is making a surprise sequel - not a reboot - to Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors. It’ll air January, 2026.

Ronin Warriors was my very first anime, way back in 1996 when Sci-fi Channel aired the English dub. I’m fucking stoked to see whatever Sunrise is gonna do with it!
Yeah, I was really surprised too. I always thought Samurai Warriors was considered a bit niche. And making a sequel after more than 30 years? It's not Mazinger. A lot of people will be like "Samurai what?".

By the way, have you seen the OVA "Message"? I think the sequel will ignore its existence.

Message is the most recent one, right? I found it painfully slow and boring. Never could understand WTF the studio thought when they made it.
Nobody knows. I think they wanted to do something existentialist like Evangelion. I looked up various summaries and the gist was "WTF!??!"

This is the best interpretation of the story I found

I think the new series ignores the OVA simply because in it
the Samurai armors are destroyed and replaced with new ones with a completely different design.

Does anyone know if there's a specific reason why Hulu pulled all the subtitled episodes of One Piece a few months ago, but left all the dubbed episodes up? It's the only anime I can find on there that doesn't have both.
Licensing most likely.

Anyone with any interest in Your Forma? Not that I've been able to find it on Samsung Plus, where it's supposed to be available in Canada and the USA. But full episodes are on Youtube (legally) in some countries, if you have a VPN.

Six episodes in, and they still haven't bothered to explain the events of the first novel or even the basics of what Your Forma is, though they frequently refer to the first book's events. They just don't provide context. The second book is the basis of the first four episodes and the third is the source of the next few. Not sure how far they're going. But boy, would I be lost if I hadn't read the first novel. Overall, it's a bit slow, or perhaps deliberate, in its pacing, dialogue-driven more than action-oriented, and it looks good. It's not likely to leave anyone thinking wow, this is original and exciting, though.

Can't be too many series where it's easier to buy English translations of the light novels and manga than to see the anime, are there? We still don't have the manga series Ghost in the Shell: Sleepless Eye or Psycho-Pass: Akane Tsunemori in English yet, and those franchises are a lot more well known.

Finally had a chance to read through that whole explanation and it seems like it makes a lot more sense! I'm gonna have to do a series rewatch before the new season... including Message, and keep this in mind to see if it improves it at all.

Nope, they're under different contracts. That's why there were a lot of sub-only series streaming on Crunchyroll that were dubbed by and available only on Funimation before the companies merged, for example. And also why Amazon doesn't have the Funi dubs for the first three Evangelion movies, either.
Oh, OK.

Keep in mind that it is always the interpretation of a single person. However, it is absurd that they created something so surreal and cryptic for something that is basically a classic shonen anime. It would be like the characters of One Piece sitting around a table for three episodes to talk about existentialism.

I read somewhere (take it with a grain of salt, it's been decades) that the idea was to give new armor to the samurai and create new stories (and related merchandising) but the flop of the OVA killed any possibility of future production of material.

Sounds like the exact same thing that happened with the movie sequel to Martian Successor Nadesico which stuck a stake in the franchise’s heart.

That one is a bit more complicated, there was an entire Video Game that explained what happened in between the Nadesico Movie & TV series.

If you didn't play it, you'd be kind of lost.

It was a Sega Saturn game called:
Martian Successor Nadesico: The Blank of Three Years

There was another game on the DreamCast called:
Martian Successor Nadesico: The Mission
This one covers what happens after "The Prince of Darkness" movie.

That’s part of the problem, though. You shouldn’t have to play a video game to be able to understand the movie. I only get what’s happening because I’ve read summaries at this point.

It was the 1990's in Japan, the Franchise Holder probably wasn't thinking of long term continuity of access.

They probably just "OKAY-ed" whatever their publisher handed them that sounded like a good deal.

Here's a fan site that explains what happens in "The Blank 3 years".

In Japan they now often make some Anime series just to drive sales of Manga and sometimes games locally. Been doing that kind of thing for decades.

That's why you see popular Anime with decent animation end on a Cliff Hanger; or worse start a new story at the end - and even though it has respectable TV ratings that would get most Anime renewed, it doesn't get renewed BECAUSE it was don e to drive local Manga sales of the property (often when the Manga is ending its entire run.)

Oh yeah, I’ve got a bunch of manga series I love that have never and will never get a full anime adaption. That trend is increasing every year, especially since the advent of 12-episode seasons. Even worse are the 2-3 volume manga adaptions of light novels, which end with a “continue the story in the novel” title.

Nadesico, however, was an anime original series from the start. There was a manga adaption, but it only ran 20 issues and veered wildly from the show itself. It should also be noted that the Blank of Three Years ended up coming out after the movie itself did, which further shot its chances in the ass.
