The General Anime Thread!

I've been reading Kowloon's manga for years now, so that was one of my most anticipated shows for the season. It's been really good... but they're going through the adaption at a breakneck pace, sometimes a volume per episode. Apparently, it's going to have an original ending, so we're only getting 13 episodes.

It's one of those manga where every other chapter leaves me going "what the fuck" in the best way possible.

I've been enjoying Food Wars anime', where high schoolers cook better than seasoned chefs and can call on knowledge of any culture's food to win battles... I read the manga first.

Did we have a thread for the live action One Piece? I've searched several times when news about the new season has come out, but nothing is coming up for it.

Pulling some old stuff off the shelf that I haven't seen since I first bought it - watching Coyote Ragtime Show right now.

The last couple seasons of Food Wars were so disappointing because it gets really weird and nonsensical at points.

The manga went there, too with fighting dark or mafia chefs. I'm on Ep 6 (the summer camp ep) of the anime'. I liked the foodgasms (food that tastes so good it makes your clothing explode off your body) animations, they're funny as hell.

Finally getting into Ergo Proxy after an interrupted attempt some time ago. Four episodes in and I really like the look of the show, but they certainly don’t go out of their way to explain what’s going on half the time. Looks like it’ll be an experience, at least.

The Animation Budget is all over the place for that show.

You can immediately tell when they lost budget or had to cut back and where they spent it.

I'm looking at my watch list for the summer 2025 season that starts next month and I'm kicking myself. Somehow, I've got fourteen shows on it, which is the most I've ever had in one season. I have no idea how in the hell I'm gonna be able to keep up with that many shows.

My Saturdays are gonna be stacked with three shows from CloverWorks - Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, My Dress-Up Darling Season 2, and The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. One helluva slate for romance fans.

Just saw an announcement this morning that Sunrise is making a surprise sequel - not a reboot - to Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors. It’ll air January, 2026.

Ronin Warriors was my very first anime, way back in 1996 when Sci-fi Channel aired the English dub. I’m fucking stoked to see whatever Sunrise is gonna do with it!

Finished Ergo Proxy a week ago. Overall, worth watching, though I don't think everything quite added up the way it was meant to. It felt like it needed another episode or two in a couple of spots. But with the help of a couple of websites and some explanations near the end it made a reasonable amount of sense.

And I finally got around to watching Geneshaft, which I'd meant to watch quite a few years ago, because it was described as a serious and reasonably straightforward science fiction anime series. I don't regret spending the few hours it took to watch it, but it wasn't a lost masterpiece. Some websites say that it was planned to be 26 episodes and was cut to 13, so the pacing is a bit off and the characterization doesn't so much develop as change when the plot requires it. The female-dominated world is still conventionally sexist, with some eye candy characters and costumes and men in leadership roles, but it feels like it's at least trying to be better occasionally. 2001 and 2010 are among some pretty obvious influences but for all its attempts at being philosophical about the future of humanity it's not particularly deep.

Meanwhile, it looks like Your Forma is complete and Kowloon Generic Romance's last episode is due this weekend. I'll start with Your Forma, which has been getting meh reviews, and save the better reviewed Kowloon Generic Romance for later.

And one episode into Your Forma... I've seen people criticize it for starting at the beginning of the second light novel. I've read the first two but if I hadn't I'd be wondering who the hell half these people are and what their connections to each other are, never mind all the references to the events of the first book.

Just watched the series finale for Lazarus. OOF.

What squandered potential, all round. It had all the pieces necessary to become a compelling modern classic, only for the execution to undermine it at every turn. The writing was so ungodly underwhelming and underbaked that I'm agog anyone allowed it to be released.

I'd really like to know WTF the English dub director was thinking during the process of working on the localization, as well. I've never heard such flat and lifeless delivery from a professional production before. It's just as shocking this was considered acceptable.

It's clear from the ending montage that they're trying to leave hints for a second season, but at this point? I just don't give a shit. I don't care about the characters. I didn't care for the disparate plot points that failed to congeal into a coherent story. I wouldn't trust this team to make another damn episode, let alone a full 13-episode cour.

I couldn't rate Lazarus any higher than 3/10. Thoroughly disappointing dogshit.

Kowloon came together very well in the end. I was worried about the quick pacing, but I think the show nailed the landing.

I'll be curious to see if the manga will end up following the anime-original ending. The author was involved with the adaption, so we'll see how that goes.

Does anyone know if there's a specific reason why Hulu pulled all the subtitled episodes of One Piece a few months ago, but left all the dubbed episodes up? It's the only anime I can find on there that doesn't have both.

Probably licensing issues.

Are subtitled version and the dubbed versions usually under different licenses? I had assumed it would be just one that covered bother versions.

Nope, they're under different contracts. That's why there were a lot of sub-only series streaming on Crunchyroll that were dubbed by and available only on Funimation before the companies merged, for example. And also why Amazon doesn't have the Funi dubs for the first three Evangelion movies, either.
