What games are you playing currently?

Silent Hill 2's remake. Some thoughts, concerning how it compares to the original...
- Resources are more scarce. You have to think about whether you want to use ammo, or restore health.
- They added an Otherworld sequence to the apartments... it's pretty scary. I was on-edge a lot.
- With the improved graphics, there's more nuance in the actors' performances. And the environment is incredibly rendered.
- The combat has a better interface... and it's a lot more brutal.

I am doing Horizon Zero Dawn on playstation 4 and I'm amazed they got this to run so well on a machine that only has an APU and 8 gig of ram

Easily one of the best looking games on the PS4. It was amazing what they were doing with it near the end.

It's the tiny hardware they have that gets me. Not just this game but over the years so many others that I thought "how the heck did they get this to run on this?" . And yet to run the same game on a PC you need a dedicated GPU and a good CPU

It goes to show that when developers really know the hardware, they can push things and take advantage of it. And when games (often first-party titles) end up looking so good near the end of hardware cycle.

And conversely, Batman Arkham Knight while looking great, runs horribly on the same hardware or even current-gen hardware like the PS5. They probably didn't know the hardware inside and out like Horizon's devs did.

Disco Elysium and Divinity original sin 2 are in the steam sale, I am trying to think which game I would like the most

Did it? That makes it even more impressive then!
I just checked...
PS4\8th console generation was 2012-2020, H:ZD was released in 2017, so around the halfway point of the generation...
The first trailer was revealed at the 2015 E3 and the main reason i finally decided to get a PS4...

I think I must have gotten it two years later as I got a used copy at EBGames/Gamestop.

What got me interested was seeing the disk version of HZD on a big shelf display around june 2019. It was the cover art of the box that got me interested and thls game is why I got a ps4

They are very different games. Disco is more of an experience you can learn to love (I didn’t like it at first but wound up really enjoying it) where Divinity 2 is exactly what you expect. The combat is a bit more difficult than you might expect but the story/stories are very good. If you’ve played BG3 then you’ll definitely see where Larian came from.

Disco is a shorter game too. Divinity has a lot of content. Both are very good games imo.

I am almost (I think) at the end of BG3. And I have read that the two games are comparable?

I have played games like Detroit become human and Sherlock Holmes crimes and punishments, can you compare those games with Disco?

They are similar but Divinity 2 was probably a little harder combat wise but that might’ve been just me not being quite used to the combat system. The characters are well developed. In a lot of ways Divinity 2 is a trial run for BG3. I know when I first played BG3 it reminded me of Div 2 in terms of design and gameplay.

I haven’t played Sherlock but I have played Detroit (great game) and I don’t know how to compare them to Disco. Detroit Become Human is much more straightforward in its message. Disco is more personal to the MC who’s an alcoholic mess going through a midlife crisis. He has a tenuous hold on reality and while he’s trying to sort out who he is and work the case you will sort through a host of political and philosophical problems. At first that came across as a little pretentious but once I realized the character is dealing with serious issues/encephalopathy from his substance abuse it started to make sense and I grew to really love it.

If you do play Disco, I encourage you to play out the cryptid hunting quest line and make sure you get your special dice.

I’ve played both Disco and Div2 more than once so I think they’re good games. Disco is just a little riskier because it is so different from anything else. At first I thought the game was just about existential dread but I think it’s more about overcoming it as you sort things out. It’s one of those games that a lot of people are going to love but others just aren’t going to get into (at first I thought I was the latter).

I bought AC Shadows for 2 reasons … 1. OH demanded I get a birthday gift and I would have eventually bought it anyway and 2. I’m spite buying. I’m so sick of the antiwoke mob that I’m willing to support UBI here. Not because they deserve or because they’re UBI but because I’m sick and tired of the bigot brigade dictating to creators what they should make.

Thanks a lot for your advise, I really appreciate it. I think I am going to buy both games, thanks to the steam sale :)

Detroit Become Human was fun but I kind of lost interest part way through. I think I left near the middle of the game it just wasn't hooking me in like the first couple of hours.

You are certainly welcome and I hope you enjoy both of them. Steam sales are wonderful for picking up games like this. I don’t think I had a back catalogue before Steam Sales came along lol

I played it on the setting that helps you find clues a little easier because I didn’t know if I’d have the patience for the gameplay and I don’t like QTEs. That helped me enjoy the story. Even in more traditional action games if I can get around QTEs, I will.

Since you’re spending less time searching for clues on that setting it speeds along the pace of the game. That might help if you ever pick it up again.
