When does DS9 get good? (No spoilers please)

You didn’t find “Duet” good? “Progress”, “In the Hands of the Prophets”? Or the opening three-parter?

I love those so much.

That said, some second season episodes you can happily skip, because they’re a bit shit/mediocre: “Melora”, “Second Sight”, “Sanctuary”, “Rivals”, “Profit and Loss”.
Essential episodes: “Necessary Evil”, “Shadowplay”, “Blood Oath”, “The Maquis”, “The Wire”, “Crossover”, “The Collaborator”, “The Jem’Hadar”.

Really? I really liked Profit & Loss, and liked Sanctuary, but have no idea why Shadowplay would be considered essential. Is the B plot important?

It doesn't need to be remastered any more than Casablanca needs to be colorized.

Casablanca was also remastered so it could be released in recent formats. You’re thinking of the widespread, Trek-related misuse of the term to mean replacing original VFX with modern creative efforts, but even so it should be obvious that DS9 remastered would include changes just as subtle as those made to TNG, where the focus was on improving audiovisual quality by going back to the source, which is what remastering usually means.

Try watching the same TNG episode on DVD and in HD. The difference is stunning, not only because of the switch from SD, but mainly because the show was originally finished on video and the previous releases never went back to film elements. A full rebuild with recomposited and recreated VFX was finally deemed necessary for HD.

"Blood Oath" was my turning point. Initially, I was disappointed that three TOS Klingons had survived until elderly ages, seemingly going against the brief life span suggested by John M Ford in his novel, "The Final Reflection" (yes, I know, not canon), and without mentioning their flat foreheads of decades before.

But "Blood Oath" was soooo good. Loved Dax in this one. Her character finally found her feet. And I found I started looking forward to each new episode. And I could finally forget the disaster that was "Move Along Home".

I’m on series 2, episode 2.

I'm not interested in Bajoran politics and religion bores me.

I was determined to sit it out until it got as good as people say it does, but my interest is waning.

My DS9 experience began with The Search part 1 (beginning of season 3).

I appreciated the second season more (well, some of it) after having seen S3 first.

You could comfortably jump to the The Maqui two parter, IMO. Swing back around to the earlier part of season 2 later if the series clicks with you.

IMO, you should watch them all, you could find something you like even in episodes that were not (initially) your cup of tea.

I’m rewatching now and on series 6 and it’s majestically good. I’ll try not to spoil with stories but what other show can boast a depth of “secondary” characters like garak and ducat to quark and Rom. Brilliant!

I feel I’d someone doesn’t like Bajoran stories already, “Sanctuary” definitely wouldn’t win them over as it’s one of the weaker ones. “Profit and Loss” fails for me largely because the central relationship has no chemistry and doesn’t ring true. It’s not bad, just rather weak.

“Shadowplay” I’d include because it not only foreshadows the Dominion but also sets up an ongoing relationship and Jake comes to an important decision about his future (I’ve had to edit this to keep it vague and avoid spoilers!)

I don't remember about the Dominion part. To what are you referring?

I think the first two seasons had some good episodes. Then in the end of season 2 things really got going. However.... after season 4 it kind of, well, I don't know. I don't remember why exactly I lost interest, it's been a while. I might need to revisit those later seasons?

That's odd. Usually, people prefer seasons 4,5, and 6 to the first three. Season seven is kind of a mixed bag.

Back in in the day I felt the same way. Early seasons were ho-hum and I didn't see them all. More on "Duet" later... Season 4 is when I tuned in to give another chance and to see how they were going -- wow -- it was amazing. As I grew to love the show, I later re-visited older episodes, including those I had never seen before, and thew new perspective helped a lot. And, again, "Duet" is an early-era masterpiece...

...but Season 4 is still the sweet spot from the get-go for me. The earlier seasons do have some moments. Maybe skipping ahead, seeing how the show progresses in the first eight episodes or so of season 4, then continuing onward then looking back if it captures your liking?

I thought it was great from the first episode. Loved the first 4 seasons, liked a lot of the 5th, then thought the quality took a bit of a nosedive in season 6 and never really recovered in 7.
