Have you read the new Gross & Altman book?

You can get a good taste of what's new via Google Books. There's a lot of repurposed material in it, especially in the sections covering the original series. There's also a fair amount of filler (Dean Devlin? Chriss Pratt? Who cares?). It's very readable, though.

Anything on the animated series in this book?

Yes, there is. They don't get much into the technical aspects, but they do touch on certain individual episodes and how they came to be. We see the perspectives of some of the writers, people from Filmation, the cast, DC Fontana and Roddenberry and some others.

I'm pretty sure that letter is in the Justman/Solow Inside Star Trek.

Actually, there is another memo, but it is not the Letter. That memo is a several pages on Bill and Leonard's characters, and a half page on De's.

In "World", Gerrold conflates the two, quoting De as saying, and I'm paraphrasing, "see? Bill and Leonard get a page and a half, and I only get a half page!"

But that's not the Letter in this new book, nor the one referred to. Gerrold just pulls a Cushman.

Speaking of which, Gerrold's stock went down with my reading of "50 Year Mission". It has been a "hold" for quite a while but now I'm afraid it's a "sell".

Agreed. He's become a petulant little pissant.

I also have to say that Jimmy Doohan comes down a notch or two. He rarely misses a chance to slag his favourite devil, Shatner, while the rest of the cast seem able to acknowledge Shatner's strengths even if sometimes annoyed with him.

On another note while Doohan and countless fans are content to lay all the blame for TFF's shortcomings on Shatner most everyone else involved readily step up to accept their share and not lay it all on Shatner. And Shatner doesn't shy from taking his lumps for his mistakes.

To be fair, when was the last time George Takei said something nice about Shatner in any way? I don't want to take this topic off course, but Takei is pretty mean about Shatner these days.

^^ You're right. Somehow I had momentarily forgotten about George. In this case it's because there isn' much of Takei bashing Shatner in this book while Doohan goes there often enough.

Really? When did Takei make the comments about Shatner that were in the book? I'm not an expert on their relationship, but it seems like it has only gotten worse over the years. I'm curious if Takei's book comments were taken from before he got seriously annoyed with Shatner.

There are no dates in the book as to when quotes were given. This is a serious shortcoming in terms of citing it, I'm afraid.

I've been avoiding this book. It looks like a semi-professional Cushman style effort. The names Altman and Gross remind me of those unlicensed episode guides of the 80's and 90's. When I skimmed it in the bookstore it just looked like a collection of quotes from old magazines.

Shouldn't have read this thread...will be buying it now

The impression I get is that the quotes date from some years after the events the contents of the quotes are referring to. Little of it strikes me as materiel dating from soon after the events themselves.

Be fair to the man, these aren't new interviews. If Doohan leans on Shatner-hate a little too often in this book, that can just as easily be the fault of the editor. Doohan has said many, many things over the years that aren't about Shatner...they just don't make a book as 'juicy' to read, so they left them out.

That said, maybe it's true...maybe they couldn't find any examples of Doohan saying something positive about Shatner because he never did. ;)

Gerrold has become quite an angry person. We could speculate why but he does not come off as pleasant or even reasonable these days. It's a shame because his World of Star Trek might be the 2nd most important Trek non-fiction book ever.

I'm wavering on whether to pick up the next volume. I have some interest in TNG--how it was developed and some of the goings on behind-the-scenes--but my interest is lacking with the following series and the TNG movies.

Nope. I've read that book from cover to cover many many times.
Think you're right, I was thinking of the Asimov letter on page 310 and Gene's reference to passing the ideas on to the team. And probably the reference in Gerrold's World book as well.

Finished the book. Still recommend it.
Was unaware of Walter Koenig (Chekov)'s anger during the filming of ST VI. Very curious.
Found out more tidbits concerning Harve Bennett's "Academy Years" storyline.

Oh, why was Koenig upset during the filming of VI?

I'm now reading about the development of TWOK.

I have to say reading some of Nicholas Meyer's ideas for Trek is ticking me off in the same way as seeing some of his ideas realized onscreen ticked me off. There is also something about Harve Bennett that puts me off as well.

Any highlights to share? I'm on the fence about picking up the book.

Bennett came to see himself as the guy who "saved" Trek. Nick Meyer didn't understand the TOS portrayal of the Enterprise and Starfleet overall hence his skewing to the Hornblower idea more literally than the way it was done in TOS and TMP.

In defense of Gerrold, put yourself in his shoes. He allegedly created quite a lot of the TNG concept only to be shut out by that universally reviled lawyer who worked full time for Roddenberry. That show made millionaires out of a lot of people. It's gotta hurt.
