DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

So, Supergirl gets rid of her red ring today. Sigh..it was fun while it lasted. I know a lot of people hated on it, but I really enjoyed Kara as a Red Lantern. I liked the budding big brother/little sister relationship between her and Guy. Too bad that's done for.

I've been on vacation the past few weeks so I'm a bit behind, but I'm not surprised the ring is gone. I was originally very skeptical about the red lantern angle but surprisingly I really liked it. So much so that I finally put Red Lanterns on my pull list.

Robin Rises Omega.

I haven't been keeping up with Tomasi's Batman and... series, and my hunch is that this is, essentially, the issue of Batman and... that follows the most recent issue, albeit one that's double-sized and drawn by Andy Kubert instead of Patrick Gleason. Because it starts with Batman, Ra's al Ghul, Frankenstein, and their army facing off with an army from Apokalips on the side of the Himalayas.

Wait. That's not exactly true.

The first eight or so pages is a pretty decent summary of Morrison's Batman epic (including Final Crisis and Batman's journey through time), the early "New 52" Batman and Robin storylines, "Death of the Family," and Bruce's alienation of the rest of the Bat-family. If you're curious how it all fits together, Tomasi lays it out.

After that, there's a lot of exposition, a lot of fighting, a lot of exposition while fighting, a punk-ass Captain Marvel, Lex Luthor getting punched in the face, and a really pissed off Batman.

Overall, a felt a bit "meh" about it. It's effective at what it does, there's enough exposition so that someone could figure out what's happening, it has a good cliffhanger. But, it's also Batman fighting Parademons, and, to be frank, that's not exactly the kind of Batman story I like. Batman and the New Gods are a bit incongruous. Batman is a rational, highly trained human being. The New Gods are, well, as far in advance of humanity as we are in advance of frogs. I accepted it in Final Crisis because I understood what Morrison was working with -- to be free, man must murder the gods -- and I'm not sold on the idea that Batman must go to Apokalips to resurrect his son.

Still. Kubert's art looked nice, the opening sequence is effective and good, it's action packed, and Batman punches Luthor in the face. I think I like this new Tony Stark-ish Lex Luthor. I hope he sticks around.

Batman #33: Final Issue of Zero Year: certainly a worthy ending to the story, but nothing really stood out about it either. I'm not disappointed, but I'm not blown away either.

Batman and Robin #33: good art, fun to see Bats tussling with the Justice League.

Superman #33: still entertaining, but JRJR's art is already starting to look rushed.

Top Five Current DC Comics?

1. Batman: by a mile. I loved Zero Year. Amazing art and dialogue and story. Instant classic.
2. Justice League: now that we're done with do nothing FE tie-ins it finally feels like a vitally important and fun book again.
3. Batman and Robin: Gleason and Tomasi are some of my favorite creators and I've been enjoying the running crossover stories.
4. Superman: only for Geoff Johns and JRJR.
5. Batman Eternal: when something happens, anyway.

Basically at this point I'm only reading DC for Batman and Geoff Johns :p Still not a New 52 fan... The second Johns left Green Lantern it went from my favorite book to something I really didn't care about following anymore.

I would agree with you on Batman 33. Loved the origin of the big penny in the batcave.

As to JRJR's art looking rushed, I don't see it. It looks as good as ever to me. Superman has gone to just about to the top of my reading list now.

I dunno, it seems to me like everything he's done since Kick Ass 1 and ASM New Ways to Die hasn't looked quite as polished...

i agree with that...but i do think his two issues of Superman have been really well drawn thus far.

JRJR's art is serviceable and consistent. There's nothing wrong with it, but there's rarely ever anything that wows me like when I open a book by artists like Ivan Reis, Francis Manapul, or Greg Capullo to name just a few examples.

Sometimes it's absolutely breathtaking. I remember most of his Spider-Man work being absolutely amazing during the JMS years but maybe that's my faulty memory.

Is there a reason a readable version of the Map of the Multiverse isn't available?

Cause they want you to buy the book?

Great interview with Morrison about Multiversity: http://comicsalliance.com/grant-morrison-multiversity-interview-dc-comics-comic-con-san-diego/
Usually the previews of art from upcoming books are readable.

I think the concept sounds really great--but why should we expect this to be anything other than an Elseworlds series DC just usually ignores Morrison's work in regular continuity?

Well from what I've heard, DC is using some of the concepts seen in Multiversity for future stories.

But that is EXACTLY how Morrison's relationship with DC works. DC uses SOME of his concepts and tosses others.

Final Crisis was the one that ticked me off the most, but more recently Batman Inc and Action Comics are also examples of this.

I am a big fan of Morrison's work, but DC just ignores it as far as continuity goes.

It's because Dan Didio hasn't always seen things or agreed with the things that Morrison has done over the years. He recognizes his genius, but hasn't always liked what Morrison has written.

The Multiversity Map will be included in the guidebook that will be published halfway through the series.

Looking forward to it! Darkseid is the ultimate DC villain. Hopefully he makes a better showing than in the opening arc of JL.
