Do you still enjoy the 90's X-Men cartoon?

Since there's no decent non-commix take on the Phoenix Saga, I've found myself wanting to revisit this show as of late. I've re-watched bits of it but the over all tone and cheesiness are just grading and I suspect it would be a chore to get through an entire season's worth of episodes now. I still really like the voice cast and those voices are what comes to mind whenever I imagine these characters save perhaps Storm. In particular I find Catherine Disher's take on Jean very pretty, warm and sensual. I'm visually impaired so pics are basically meaningless. But I'm forced to agree with Comics Alliance that over all the show just doesn't hold up all that well. Did any of you buy the DVDs that were released a few years back? If so, how'd you find the experience of viewing them after more than 20 years since the show's original run?

I remember rewatching it approximately five years ago, and the animation was horrible, but it remains the most faithful adaptation of X-Men comics out there. X-Men Evolution and Wolverine & the X-Men were both alternate versions, and the movies were never that straight an adaptation.

It's just too bad the last season or two was absolute crap.

Also, it's what made Apocalypse and Mister Sinister my all time favorite X-Villains. I never get tired of Pocy's voice

As soon as I saw your thread title, I immediately thought of Chris Sims' reviews of the show over at Comics Alliance. I see you've already are aware of his reviews. For those who aren't, I highly suggest pairing re-watching the show with reading the reviews. Or just plain reading the reviews. Prepare to laugh, a lot.

I still enjoy the show. The animation could use some work, and Wolverine is definitely held back a lot (I'm not expecting blood, but both this and Spider-Man TAS had some weird censorship stuff) but I think that it holds up overall. It probably isn't as good as Wolverine & the X-Men would have been if it had been given more episodes, but I still enjoy it.

I wish I could find more info online but came up short. Anyway, there was at least one episode that was done by a different studio that had fantastic animation. I remember as I was watching it thinking I didn't remember the series looking this good and looked it up and it was done by a different studio.

I think you're talking about the new opening sequence someone in Japan made when they started airing it over there. Sadly, the episode animation was not the same.

that looked awesome! but why is Magneto commanding the Brood? and why is Cable treated like a regular character? lol

^ no, it was an actual episode. Gonna drive me nuts but I'm not sure how to figure it out without watching the whole series.

1st season was okay to quite good for the most part with a reasonably decent story, excellent artwork and good animation.

The rest, not so much.

The last few stories though were abysmal, utterly awful, especially in regards to the art & animation. I mean the art quality had been dropping (to the point I was seriously wondering if the danger mouse guys were doing some of the backgrounds), but those last 2-3 stories were awful.

What shocked me though were the characters. They were so flat compared to the characters in the 90's Spider-man cartoon (and to be honest, those weren't that great either). And the acting... A lot of it was just plain bad. Though that could be down to the awful dialogue.

Certainly no where near as good as X-men Evolution or even Wolverine and the X-men.

Part of what was fun about the 90's show is that a lot of it came right out of the comics at the time. This is on Netflix now, isn't it? This thread has me jonesin' to watch some again.

^Me too but I fear the quality will drop from what it was when I watched it as a kid. Everything blew my mind back then.

I still love the 90s X-Men! The animation might be a little stiff, but the stories were wonderful, and the voice acting was great. Whenever I think of these characters, those are the versions that I see and hear in my head.

And its premiere episode is so sad.

"Wolverine, fall back!"
"Moooooorrrrrppphhh!!!!!"

I loved the greymalkin time machine--a domed city-ship. If you want to go back in time--take your industry base.

Erm, no. The animation produced for that opening did not appear in the series, I'd remember if it did. I was never a fan of the animation style chosen for X-Men, though there were some episodes that were better animated than others. The best animated appearance of the team (before Evolution), was in their guest appearances on Spiderman TAS. I recall being frustrated over how good the character designs looked and were animated-now that's how I wanted the show to look!

Sadly, the Fox Kids X-Men series isn't streaming on Netflix in the US. Disc rentals only. It is streaming on 7 other Netflix regions.

If you're referring to the posted video, that opening only aired like that in Japan on TV Tokyo and when UPN started airing it in America.

@bbjeg
Thanks for the added info. UPN was not available to me during it's early years, so I never saw-or heard of this alternate opening done for TV Tokyo. I assumed Mr Adventure thought that those sequences were in actual episodes that he might have missed/not remembered.
