Paramount officially announces Star Trek 3 for 2016

I forgot about that vague plot synopsis they released. Reminds me of TNG's "Conspiracy".

"When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis."

I still don't know how you can detonate what Starfleet stands for.

Also, it would be fun to have the bluegill invasion in the AU. Instead of being Starfleet command, it could be more of a "Thing" style mystery on the Enterprise, wondering who can be trusted as the ship hurtles towards unknown space.

Of course, that was just off the cuff.

That didn't happen until later on. It did absolutely nothing to hurt Star Trek Into Darkness' success and, if anything, caused others to look down on Trek fans.

I was shocked and appalled that the media will take that kind of story seriously.

Most didn't. Just your niche orientated sites too notice (and before someone says it, I'm sure someone had it in the entertainment section of a mainstream website as well.)

I'm still trying to figure out WHAT makes Into Darkness the worst Trek movie of all time. Maybe it is personal preference, but there is much to enjoy in Into Darkness as any other Trek film I have seen.

It is unfortunate that I allowed sour grapes to detract me from seeing Into Darkness for so long. There was so much grumbling on another fan forum (not this one but won't name any names) that I just got frustrated and gave up. My mistake, as I probably would have seen it multiple times if I hadn't made that choice. So, the poll may not have done the damage, but there was more negative feedback than I recall 09 getting. But, that just could be me.

I just think it boils down to it not being what they are used to. Next Generation suffered similar backlash back when it premiered. I think the Abramsverse films are much more a spiritual successor to TOS than the spinoffs and I think that also throws some folks for a loop.

Then there's the simple fact that some folks just simply enjoy complaining for the sake of complaining.

While there's room for improvement, I overall have enjoyed both the new movies. Into Darkness is much better than the "worst ST movie". I'd put it solidly in the top third.

I have Into Darkness ranked third as well. Behind The Motion Picture and The Undiscovered Country.

I know that TNG did have it's backlash and I know that it rubbed some fans the wrong way. Then again, so did Nick Meyers and TWOK. So, there probably is always going to be this feeling of it not being "true" to Star Trek.

Part of the interesting aspect is that Star Trek means so many things to so many different people. TOS was unique for its time, but still had its problems. However, TOS will always be viewed with a certain level of respect that anything new after it will have to fight to earn. Similar thing with TWOK or UC. As films, they stand apart, but are also respected for the work that they have done.

But, they tell a story for a generation. Abrams Trek tries to bridge a generation with its storytelling, but it has a much higher mountain to climb to get that respect.

But, I get that Abrams Trek isn't for everyone. I still think it is a good film.

I do not think it had an impact on STID Box office earnings but I think it hurt the film's reception in the long run. there are many people out there who now think STID sucks and is a bad film without even giving it a chance and this is because of the awful poll.

Indeed not. In the end, it was quite the win for nuTrek. It destroyed hardcore fan credibility with both the public and the studio, it propelled Orci to the director's chair, and it may even have contributed to Hollywood's recent decision to dispense with fanboy opinion once and for all.

I dislike this sentiment among enthusiasts of the films that the only people that don't like these movies are "fanboys". I don't dislike the nuTrek films for being different (I really dig a lot of the different iterations of Trek), I dislike them for being badly written. I think Abrams brought a kind of energy to the movies that was much needed for the franchise, but the writing has been subpar. This is why I'm more skeptical now that Abrams has left and Orci is stepping in.

"Fanboys" are the ones that are incredibly loud about their dislike of the Abrams films. I'm sure there are lots of people who dislike them, they just have the common sense to not act like Abrams ripped a kidney out of their bodies bare-handed.
