I was at a small convention this weekend, which hosted the Constellation Awards ceremony. This is the eighth year of the awards, and I've been the stage manager since the beginning. Here I am waiting for one of one of our presenters to finish up with a conversation so that I can take them into the ballroom and do a quick runthrough on the stage (not the other people in the photo - whoever I was waiting for, they were on the other side of the foyer):
(Actually, I might have been waiting for our host - the show was hosted by Rick Green, whom some of you might know from Prisoners of Gravity, the comedy troupe The Frantics, or his role as Bill Smith on The Red Green Show. I don't actually remember who I was waiting for, but I do remember that I was thinking, "Come on, it's only 20 minutes until the banquet and I still have to do runthroughs with three more presenters!")
Our little convention got some media notice around the world, actually, but not for a reason we would have preferred - some drunk who was not part of the convention, but was there for a wedding reception, pulled out the fire hose on the seventh floor (the floor I was on), causing a flood which flowed down the elevator shafts to the third floor electrical room, causing a fire to break out. The water continued down to the lobby, causing a partial ceiling collapse and flood, and the hotel was evacuated at 4:30 in the morning. Needless to say, we had to cancel the Sunday of the convention - which meant my Match Game hosting debut was cancelled. Apparently we made every TV channel here in Toronto as well as newspapers across the country and in the U.K. (though the Mirror mistakenly referred to us as a "science convention"). Fortunately nobody was hurt, and the guy who pulled the hose was arrested and is being charged with mischief. (I guess there's nothing more appropriate in the Criminal Code, but mischief does carry a maximum punishment of ten years in prison.)
So needless to say, we haven't actually posted the list of award winners yet. I'll have to post a link somewhere when the list goes up on our website.

I took a week's vacation and made a bit of a road trip in my new car. While out on the road, I decided to take the opportunity to go and get pictures of a couple of buildings that i had seen on TV as a kid and check out a nearby museum.
