Commands turned down by Riker: Right call or Bad career moves?

As far as I know, Riker was still the 1st officer when TNG ended...

I guess you're talking about some not so official continuation to the series?

Riker was slated to take command of the U.S.S. Titan at the end of Star Trek: Nemesis.

PICARD: Come. ...Will!
RIKER: Permission to disembark, sir.
PICARD: Granted. ...So, where's the Titan off to?
RIKER: The Neutral Zone, sir. We're heading up the new task force. Apparently the Romulans are interested in talking.
PICARD: Well I can't think of a better man for the job. ...If I may, just a word of advice about your first command.
RIKER: Anything.
PICARD: When your first officer insists that you can't go on away missions,...
RIKER: ...ignore him. I intend to. ...Serving with you has been an honour.
PICARD: The honour was mine, Captain.

There are a series of non-canon novels that follow the adventures of the Titan.

Sorry, didn't remember that, honestly because I think Nemesis is a horrible movie and I haven't seen it for a looong time and I don't even want to watch it, ever again.

He was 1st officer at the and of '...All Good Things' which is where TNG ends for me. :)

I use to think that way. But when I rewatched the TNG movies several years ago, I realized Nemesis was the best of the bunch.

I think becoming a first officer changed everything. He became satisfied with the position he had on the Enterprise. And why not, if you think about it.

He had the authority and got to sit in the chair a lot without having all the responsibilities of being a full time captain.

I think that's what Picard meant that by being the first officer had a certain glory to it.

That may be what "best of both worlds " title was referring to.

Nemesis the best? Report to sickbay for a level 3 diagnostic

Not as bad as its reputation, I do think its better than Generations but thats about it.

I feel that Commander Riker stayed on the Enterprise because that was where all the Action was.
You never (rarely) hear of any other Ship that has the track record of the Enterprise.
They were, like Kirk's crew, on the edge of Space, always discovering something new and making a difference.
And with the Enterprise name and the history behind it, it would be hard for anyone to leave. Not that it is considered to be an ego thing or glory hound, but that he wants, along with the rest of the crew and also why after being Head of StarFleet Medical, Beverly came back as well, make a difference and test their limits. Neither would have been able to do that if they were transferred.

During the shows run I liked Riker, would have been put off if he'd left but now, in hindsight, it does seem pretty stupid for him not to have moved on.

People getting promoted/transferred, (in addition to killing a major character every once in a while) are both things I agree should be done in order to project better senses of realism to any future live action Trek series.
