The weird thing, I don't even follow football that much. I kinda check the final results of Serie A (if I remember), and I might watch a match if Juventus is playing the UEFA Champions League final or somesuch, but usually I couldn't care less.

But the World Cup brings out the football fan in me.

I didn't bet for Italy-Uruguay, I have sincerely no prediction.

I crossed my town with the bus today, I saw a few flags (French and Algerian) and some teenage girls with blue white and red obvious make up. It's something very unusual except during the world cup.

The refereeing was embarrassing, but Italy was more embarrassing in my opinion. Except for the last 10 minutes, we didn't even try.

Well, time to choose another team for this world cup. So... Que viva Hollanda!

I also didn't like what we did in offense in this World Cup but in all honesty I think we'd still be in it if not for these really weird referee decisions. And Italy tends to improve after the group stages. But yeah, I'm sick and tired of Italy's usual laziness in the group stages. When it works you have a pretty rested team going into the knockout stages but when it doesn't it's embarrassing.

I've said that I wouldn't be heartbroken if Italy gets eliminated. The thing is: This is a particularly bitter way to get knocked out. It's very unlike me to blame the referee. When Italy was eliminated in 2010 all I thought was that we deserved it if we can't score enough goals in that easy group.

Luis Suarez is such a disgusting man. What a piece of shit that guy is. I also hope FIFA will make sure he misses the rest of the WC but it's not like that's going to help Italy at all.

I'm trying to not let it ruin the WC mood for me but I feel for the players. Preparing for a WC for years and then having a game like this happen is really bitter. Even though it was obviously lame to play for a tie for 60 minutes.

I'll definitely be rooting for Germany now but hey... they can still lose on thursday. And Holland? Really? Eww.

I've got a soft spot for Chile and they'll be facing Brazil in the next round. That should be fun.

Suarez should recieve a 12 month ban in the international game, actually make sure it lasts till after 2015 Copa America. He should also get a club suspended ban (6-8 games minimum) for 2 years that kicks in if he is sent off or found guilty of violent conduct for any club he plays for.

I can't really argue with you about that. But for me it was not just a matter of slacking off in the group stage: we didn't have a good team to start with. The old players (Buffon, Pirlo, De Rossi, etc.) are still great, but the new guys were pretty bad.

Telly says two years or 24 games is the maximum ban from international competition. Nowhere near enough.

Why? Is biting someone worse than intentionally kicking someone in the head, or elbowing them in the face or a leg breaking challenge?

Biting someone as he did today is well weird, obviously wrong and he'll get his punishment (probably a 3-6 international game ban) - and deservedly so, if not more.

Should Jack Charlton have been banned for life when he bit an opponents finger? Defoe when he bit an opponent? Were you calling for Shearer to be banned when he kicked Lennon on the floor in the face and then told the FA that if they did anything about he'd refuse to play in the World Cup? Ben Thatcher's elbow on Mendes? Keane on Hallaand?

The furore over this seems very strange - just wait till these people find that others have lost their homes to stage this World Cup, people have died building the some of the stadiums, and many people will die building stadiums in Quatar for 2022. Imagine their furore then, no?

But, hey, someone bit someone else on a football pitch - and there's no chance he'll get away with it - but perhaps some perspective is needed?
