Star Trek Continues: Episode 3...

Vic embodies Kirk magnificently. I hope he plays the part for a good long time.

Likewise. He's also aging pretty gracefully. I think he's got several years before the difference between his and TOS-era Shatner's appearance becomes striking.

As for STC "poaching" actors from Phase II, it's hardly surprising that actors who really like Star Trek would be open to working on other such productions.

There's one shot in this episode where Kirk smiles at McCoy's torturing where Vic REALLY looks like Shatner.

Another really good episode from Star Trek Continues. The work by all involved continues to be amazing.

Vic can play Kirk. I have no idea what the hell Pine does.

Plays Kirk. Glad I could help. Let's move on.

I was watching the episode for a second time, and I figured I'd mention the lighting. While I love Phase II, and Exeter, and the other productions, it seems that STC has the lighting nailed down. No area looks too dark, and nothing is washed out. It just really adds to the overall feel of the episode, and makes it that much easier for me to be fooled into believing this is an original episode of TOS.

I mean to ask the question on the STC Facebook if this MU is going to follow the timeline established by DS9 or if it will effectively ignore it. I kind of hope the latter.
The folks at STC have said more than once that they want to maintain an authentic feel to their episodes. And, according to them, part of that is to not refer directly to things outside of TOS (such as other productions) because those things did not yet exist in 1966-69. That said it doesn't mean they will necessarily go out of their way to contradict what might have been established elsewhere, but only that they won't refer to it.

DS9 only established that Spock brought about changes or reforms to the Terran Empire that (apparently) left it vulnerable and unable to properly defend itself. No timeline was established for how long this took to happen or exactly how it all happened. With that being sufficiently vague it leaves a lot of room for interpretation as to what and how everything went down after Prime Kirk returned to the Prime Universe.

Vic can play Kirk. I have no idea what the hell Pine does.

That's a matter of opinion.

He looks like a cross between Shatner and Pine and has the heart of a teenager. :)
He better hope so, because in about 4 or 5 years he's going to need a pacemaker if he intends to keep playing Kirk. And I'm not being mean. If some folks have a cow at Elvis playing Kirk, wait till they see a senior citizen playing the young captain.

I don't know. Except for this episode I don't really like this show. So either I'm wrong and the show is good or I'm right and people are so desperate for new Trek they'll slap lipstick on a pig and anoint it in the name of the Great Bird Of The Galaxy and call it Star Trek. JJ Trek does exactly the same thing.

But Continues would work with better actors. So we'll see. Like I said this was better than the other two because they were sticking to the TOS realm, not bastardizing what they can from TNG and shoe honing it into their storytelling.

No, it isn't. It's what he does. You don't have to like it. You don't have to add it to your personal headcanon. You can blank it from your signature. You can go kicking and screaming into every theater on the planet voicing your displeasure. You can take out an ad in the local paper decrying the movies. Yet when you have to deal with the reality where other people live and work every day, nothing you say, or believe, will take away the fact that Chris Pine is now Captain James T. Kirk. He has been blessed, and endorsed, by the people who make Star Trek happen. It is a part of history now; a part of reality. Let it go.

Now, more importantly, back to the thread and the topic at hand.

Vic's portrayal of Kirk works even though he's older, because he's managed to embody that youthful spirit that Shatner had imbued his character, in order to counter the more serious side of the Horatio Hornblower persona. I figure that even 5 years from now, he will still be just as fit, and just as capable, should he choose to continue the role.

I don't read a whole lot about the behind the scenes stuff, as it allows for a more enjoyable viewing experience to just 'see it for what it is'. More, pure fun that way. Just as it was in the early 70's. :)

I had no idea, nor would have guessed that Mr. Mignonga is 52. He looks fantastic! Besides, chronological age isn't really a factor in acting. It didn't shatter my credibility with James Daly in Requiem for Methuselah.

Everyone's talking about the actors, which I suppose is normal. But I'd like to throw a kudos to the behind-the-camera work. In terms of lighting, for instance, this shot was most impressive to me: talk about faithful to the source!

Yes! This is a great example of the lighting quality. This is probably why it feels so much like TOS.

Or maybe you could choose not to be so lazy as to put everyone in a box and write them off. It's not "desperation" that draws people to this. And, guess what? You're also not "wrong" for disliking the show. Art is subjective.

I would get so into his performance, that when he would back away, and I could see his face directly, I would realize that this isn't TOS, and that wasn't William Shatner ...

You've just described perfectly my experience watching Vic/Kirk. Thanks. :)

+1

Pine is Kirk. Been watching since 1975 and Pine does an excellent job.

Great care (and time) was taken in trying to duplicate the beginning sequence so that it would match "Mirror, Mirror" as closely as possible. Here you can see the reference photos that we were trying to match. Also note that Vic is not in the transporter chamber; agghhh, the magic of illusion!! :)

Indeed. Lighting is so crucial. It really wouldn't do to just illuminate the sets, especially with Star Trek. It would be too easy, without the care Feek61 illustrated above (thanks for that, by the way! :techman: ), for it to have the vibe of something like a Saturday Night Live skit!

Yes, it's is. And I'm far from being the only one who thinks so.

I'd go so far as to say that if anyone watching a few minutes of Chris Pine's performance of Kirk cannot recognise the character almost immediately, they must not have watched much of TOS.

His perfomance is more spot on than a great many pretenders to that role I've seen. TOS Purists playing dress up is cute and all, well, maybe the first couple of times, after 50 or so it's become embarrasing.

But they, as the small minority they are, no matter how much they pretend to be otherwise, are the only ones making these complaints.

And since the fandom no longer care what they think, nevermind the larger audience, or the general public, there is no reason for their drivel to be listened to.

But listen to it we seem to have to, for the small few for whom this is a point of contention out of a deep seated personal bias that got old years ago, before NuTrek even came long.

And so long as Abrams continues not only to drown them out with entertaining Trek but to further encourage the fandom to drown them out as well, I can only applaud him, Pine, and the others further in their endeavour in making Trek something beautiful again.

And I enjoy it all the more, for you, in particular, crying yourself to sleep each night because of it. You (barely) living anachronism of a person.

And with this sttement you have just lost all credibility. Back to our regularly scheduled thread subject.

Pine is good as Kirk. He's not Shatner--he's not trying to be--and the new films are not trying to reproduce TOS.

What STC is doing, and doing a bangup job, is picking up where TOS left off.

Two completely different things. I like both.

Thank you, Urbandefault. While I can relate to those who are not totally comfortable with NuTrek,, I also can't help thinking that it's given Trek, as a whole, a shot in the arm, which has rebounded to more people seeking out the earlier incarnations. As noted elsewhere, it's been twenty years shince "The Jem'hadar" aired.

Those who feel obligated to be whiny, trash other people's opinions, and just be general jackwipes should go to other boards and discuss politics where such behavior is par for the course.
