The Phantom

The only other thing weird about it was the ghost of his father. I don't remember anything like that being in the comic strip.

It wasn't in the comic strip. It was something they came up with for the movie. But I liked it and I think it worked well.

I take it we can treat this as a spoiler thread now that RJD has seen the movie. In any event, spoiler warning, just in case.

The Phantom has one of my favorite death scenes for a villain ever. The way Drax is so fascinated by what's going on that he goes out with a joyous "Unbelievable!" and a whoop of laughter is hilarious. You can see it here (skip to about the one minute and 50 seconds mark if you just want to see the climatic moment):

Yeah, I got a kick out of that, too. I liked his character from the scene in the museum early on when the first two heads got together and he was psyched about it. There was also a scene in the cave toward the end where he accidentally killed one of his minions and seemed genuinely upset for a moment. Then he gave that roller-coaster whoop when he was obliterated. Definitely a very different and fun kind of villain.

I might be mis remembering this because it has been a while since I've seen the film, but doesn't the Phantom basically say to CZJ "Why are you evil? Have you ever considered being one of the good guys?" and she basically renounces being bad on the spot.

I really hope I've remembered that right because aside from the "No smoking in the skull cave" it's one of my most amusing memories of the film!

^^ My only big problem with The Shadow was that they made Lamont Cranston an irredeemably evil man who was forced into doing good through mind control.

Not really, Craston spent years with the Tonku learning his various tricks.

That was actually from Diana Palmer, who asked the questions "Why are you so mean? Don't you care about anything?"

CZJ replied "Like what?"

Diana told her, "You figure it out." And look CZJ gave her back seemed to consider it. About 15 - 20 minutes later she stuck her neck out for Diana, saying after "We girls should stick together."

Thus did CZJ turn to the light side. ;)

Until Chicago . . . .

What happens in Chicago stays in Chicago.

I'm not talking about tricks, I'm talking about the character.
