DC Comics/Warner Bros. has got a whole library of animated DTV (Direct To Video) movies staring the major DC Comics characters, many of which are based on certain storylines from comic book miniseries and graphic novels, and they're a big success.

I was thinking, why can't Paramount and CBS do this with Star Trek? We could get movies based on Star Trek novels, or on original stories that somebody came up with; these stories could be set in the Prime Universe or the new universe of the two recent movies.

Do I have a great idea? Or is it a bad one?

It might satisfy some people, but not me. I did like what Warners did with that Superman show in the 90s or whenever, preferring it to their Batman of the same time. But I prefer Trek as live action.

^Hey, you got to admit, the DC DTV DVD's do sell a lot, and have fans; maybe the same magic could work with anything Star Trek.

Might work better as being set in the Star Trek universe, but not trying to base it around a specific show. Though it could be left open for known characters/actors to make appearances as either vocal regulars or guests. That would make it flexible enough that they could do an episode as they had the time. You could still have completely new regular characters, voiced by perhaps name stars not affiliated with Trek previously, and then maybe have Dorn (for example) show up in a show as Worf for a 2-parter or something.

DC produces comic books. CBS produces award-winning television shows. I don't think CBS feels the same way about DTV stuff as DC does.

I was thinking of DTV animated movies based on Star Trek novels, myself, but I can see where you're coming from.

When all that you produce is a ton of crime shows and reality TV shows, it's time to diversify. And I wasn't talking about making them for TV, but home video. There are enough Trek fans to make a sale of these videos, especially if they make DTV animated movies based on the new movies (they also can make movies with the casts of TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.

All? Perhaps you've heard of a top rated, award winner show call "The Big Bang Theory?" In the top slots CBS has as many comedies as cop shows.

If they though it would both make money, and not interfer with the next Trek movie, I could see CBS allowing a DTV movie or series.

    :)

^The DTV animated movies made by Marvel and DC don't have a negative impact on the live action movies and TV shows, so there shouldn't be a problem with similar movies made by CBS, if CBS wanted to do this. In fact, the popularity among fans of this fan movie shows what could be done by CBS and Paramount.

And yes, I've heard of said show, but even with its success, CBS needs to diversify.

I would certainly support a DTV (especially Blu-Ray) Trek animated series of movies, just as Warner Bros and Marvel do for their superhero properties, as long as the stories are as well done as the Marvel and DC animated movies...in fact, make 'em good, PG-13 rated animated movies like Marvel and Trek.

I wouldn't care which universe it was set in. I could just as easily go for TOS movie era animated movies, or TNG animated movies, as I could for a JJ Abrams universe series of movies.

Have the ships done in CG, and the characters hand drawn or cel-shaded.

This is inspiring me to want to go back and do my CG animated Trek mini movies. :)

I have wished they would do animated movies. It would be more likely to get the original actors back to do the voice overs, since you don't have to worry about looks and fitness, and there's a wealth of great material to draw on. Vanguard, New Frontier, the Shatner novels, DS9 relaunch new TNG and Voyager...I'd be all over that.

And if they were to go TOS movie era....I say make a series of animated movies that take place between TMP and TWOK...(my CG mini-movie of Captain's Log: Declassified takes place during that time).

I think it would be a great era to explore...detailing Kirk's second five year mission before returning to the admiralty. :)

    I think it's a solid idea, sure.
