If anyone needs proof that Toronto is a long ways away from being a baseball city again, the team is on a seven game winning streak and has one of the hottest hitters in Edwin Encarnacion, but it took a free jersey give away for the building to sell out. Tonight, there's maybe 11,000 in the Rogers Centre.

Don't sweat it man. I've rooted for the Braves forever and it is just one of those towns that doesn't care much for the team no matter where they stand. Certain cities are like that and it isn't going to change. Just enjoy the product on the field. I root for the players. I don't tune in for the fanbase. Fans are annoying anyway.

So I was bored last night and skipping through various games on MLB.tv ... I know everyone likes to complain about their manager (I guess Rays and A's fans are excepted), and I'm no fan of the Cardinals in the first place, but holy shit, Mike Matheny was staggeringly dumb yesterday.

4-4 game, top of 8. With two out and a man on 3rd, Matheny:

1.) Orders an IBB of Pablo Sandoval so he can pitch to Michael Morse, instead. This was stupid enough (and in fact Sandoval would come around to score), but he then:
2.) Makes a double switch, removing Kolten Wong (batting 2nd) in favor of Daniel Descalso (batting .173). Descalso's very presence on the roster is pretty stupid, as is bringing him into a game to replace your hottest hitter, but to top it off:
3.) Wong (batting 2nd, remember) had ended the previous inning. Meaning the #3 hitter was leading off the 8th. Meaning the only way the #9 hitter even bats in the 8th is if the Cardinals bring seven men to the plate, which would've guaranteed they scored at least one run.

Matheny spent almost his entire career in the National League. How the fuck did he not pick up how a double switch works, just by osmosis?

I am not sure how I feel after the Tigers/A's series. Three close games and one blowout.

A's led off with a big win, but their bullpen failed them twice.
Tigers got blown out, and their bullpen failed them once.

I didn't learn anything new, other than Jim Johnson is a big waste of money, and the A's strike out too much. It felt nice to get some runs off Scherzer, that's for sure.
I was hoping for a more conclusive "victory" but I will take a split.

Now with the Angels and the Blue Jays getting hot, the AL is getting interesting again.

College Baseball regionals kicked off today and I just saw the hidden ball trick executed to perfection. I love college baseball. It is cool to get a glimpse of the projected first rounders in a highly competitive environment.

Rogers Centre/Skydome opened 25 years ago today and it is already woefully out of date. It is a concrete monstrosity and it's hard to watch a game there unless you are in the prime seats. Sure, the eventual move to grass from turf will make it better for players, but it's still brutal for fans.

Rogers Centre/Skydome opened 25 years ago today and it is already woefully out of date. It is a concrete monstrosity and it's hard to watch a game there unless you are in the prime seats. Sure, the eventual move to grass from turf will make it better for players, but it's still brutal for fans.

It looks OK to me.

Rogers Centre may be multipurpose, but at least it wasn't built 'on the cheap' like the cookie cutters were. I wouldn't expect the Jays to want out of there anytime soon, esp. since they're getting a grass field. It sure looks like a nice place. I'll be there in three weeks and can't wait.

(NO way am I going up in the CN Tower though.)
