2014 MLB Season: How Many Pitchers Will Die For Our Sins?

Carlos Beltran is on his way to see Dr. James Andrews about his elbow. So, by my count, that gives us:

Teixeira - hurting
Cervelli - hurt
Nova - out for season
Pineda - hurt
Sabathia - hurt
Beltran - hurt

And still tie for first
A game ahead over the birds. ;)

At all of four games over .500, and in first because the AL East is a cripple fight.

You're point?

No point, just amusement that a team I fully expected to be old and broken-down is revealing itself to be ... well, old and broken-down.

Fun statistic of the day: Mike Olt now has 18 hits on the season.

Nine of them have been dingers.

I'm at the point where watching B.J. Upton hit is causing me irrational anger. Pitchers are going at him like he is an American League pitcher and getting away with it. No waste pitches, no nibbling at the corners, just straight up challenge fastballs right down broadway. Good morning, good afternoon and goodnight. He won't touch any of it and will more than likely get frozen solid on the third pitch. Three pitch at bats have no place at the major league level. Whatever grace period he has is done with me. How much rope is Fredi going to give him before he winds up keeping Uggla company?

I was surprised when the Braves signed him to that five-year deal a year and a half ago because everything in his statistical profile was suggesting he was very much on the brink of complete and utter collapse, and it isn't looking any better now. At the time, I pointed out his swing percentage on pitches outside the zone:

2008: 15.0%
2009: 19.6%
2010: 25.3%
2011: 27.2%
2012: 32.7%

And his walk / strikeout rates are reflective of that -- his on-base percentage hasn't been north of .300 since 2011, and he's leading the league with fifty-six strikeouts -- and we're only halfway through May!

I'm honestly shocked they haven't tried to flip him for pitching at this point (although I'm sure they don't want to piss off Justin).

It was a terrible decision made from a position of desperation for a center fielder. I'm ready to give Schafer the nod in the leadoff spot. I don't like Schafer all that much but he can at least put down a bunt or leg out a grounder every once in a while with his speed.

CC Sabathia is now out until at least July, leaving the Yankees' rotation as:

Kuroda (ancient)
Tanaka (as good as advertised thus far, surprisingly)
Nuno (lol)
Phelps (lol)
Whitely (is a reliever, what the fuck  )

Time for my homerific post of the week.

My Oakland A's are beasting!

2nd overall in runs scored, RBI, OBP and OPS.

Top ten in hits, home runs, and team batting average.

In pitching they are top 3 in Team ERA, Quality Starts, and Runs allowed.

They are 1st(!) in Opponents BA and On Base Percentage.

They have the highest run differential in the league, and second best record.

If they can tighten up their bullpen, they are locks to play the Tigers in the ALCS.

Plus I actually get to see them in person when they play the Rays this Thursday. :bolian::techman:

My favorite thing in baseball just happened. Lyle Overbay just took the hill for the Brewers tonight and retired Ryan Doumit with a popout. Probably needs Tommy John after that outing. Love it when position players have to pitch.

I was there for that one, definitely a WTF moment when I saw his name pop up on the scoreboard as "now pitching"

Why surprisingly for Tanaka? I really had no doubt.

Break...

Tanaka didn't have his best outting last night, but the Yankee bats are on the DL with Sabathia... eessshhhh...

Gonna have to make a deal or two for some more pitching. I think CC will be out for the year.

Players, especially pitchers, from Japan bust just as frequently as they succeed. For every Darvish, there's a Masato Yoshii. Tanaka had a hell of a run in Japan, but he was still a gamble -- a very expensive gamble. I'm also concerned about his arm ... he's thrown a lot of innings for his age.

When the fucking Cubs get six runs off you, you know there's a pitching problem. That being said, I don't think the Yankees have any legitimate chits to trade -- the farm is essentially barren, and they're currently relying on their best minor-league pitchers to fill the holes in the rotation. And they really need to hang onto guys like Bird, because the entire infield is old, broken, shitty, or some combination of the three.

Did you watch the game? I caught about 4 innings... I thought the Giants had moved :D We'd shift, they'd hit it there. I think Tanka gave up three... he wasn't bad, but not as consistant as he had shown in his previous starts.

He's Human. What was that, 34-0?... pretty good run, no matter the country.

They will rip out the check book...

I will say I was relieved when Ellsbury decided to let a ball hit the ivy instead of doing his normal comikaze thing... that brick don't give.

The only one hitting right now is Gardner and Yangsy... (head slap) My 11-12 year old team is hitting better :D
