It would be in the middle of the Roman Empire. Or Medieval England.

Given that the episode they're currently shooting is the many years delayed
    Orient Express In Space
story, he's not out of period anyway.

Really? Orient Express in space, that's the next thing for Moffat? And I thought the Spitfires in space was bad, or the Titanic in space (even though RTD did that). What is it lately with iconic vehicles in space? Why, why?

The Orient Express in space is in fact Matt Smith's idea. The bit at the end of The Big Bang where the Doctor answers the phone and talks about that wasn't actually in the script, it was just something Smith came up with on the spot to make the scene interesting.

And the Spitfires in space came from Mark Gatiss, who is something of a Spitfire nut.

Well it was all under Moffat's leadership, he could have done something about it.

And now we have Smith to blame for yet another potentially dreadful episode.

Every story, every idea could potentially be a dreadful episode.

We don't know that it'll be dreadful, that's just your fears. And, Smith isn't able to force anyone to make the episode. Sheesh!

Here's a little trick that I find works wonders:

    1) Try something.
    2) Then decide if it's any good.

Remember: Follow the steps in that order.

Wasn't there a cartoon show which was basically
    the Orient Express in space?

Anyway, no point getting worked up until we see it.

I'm just waiting until the Doctor visits the space liner Andrea Doria right before it rams into the Sontaran warship Stok'Hom. :techman:

Honestly, though, I liked the space Titanic, and I'd be fine with a space Orient Express. Sometimes you just have to roll with stuff like this in Doctor Who, and as long as the episode is entertaining, who cares?

True. After all, in the classic series we've had the Space 1950s Bus, Space Seagoing-Ships-Run-By-Aliens-and-Crewed-By-Brainwashed-Humans, and of course Space Yellow-1920s-Roadster-Modified-Beyond-Comprehension-By-a-Time-Travelling-Alien. Anacrhonistic stuff in Doctor Who is hardly anything new.

To be honest, when the Doctor was talking about all that in the phone call about an Egyptian goddess on the loose on the Orient Express...in space, I thought it sounded very intriguing. I wanted to see them go on that adventure!

Would this episode be a follow-up to that (offscreen) adventure, or did they never actually go on that adventure and this will be the Doctor finally deciding to do something about it? Of course, things being timey-wimey as they are, the Doctor could show up just mere minutes after the phone call had been made to him, even though several years (decades? centuries?) have gone by since then from his perspective.

Late comment, but if you're ever playing continuity holes, add up how often the 1st Doctor swaps his coat for local costume... but has it back next story.

When I heard him.say it at the end of the episode I was hoping he was laying in a teaser for the following Christmas special!

Yep. And in some missing episode cases there's no telesnaps to prove he didn't somehow recover it. But in Reign of Terror he definitely doesn't, ISTR.
And Crusade... where the sudden change of clothes is a plot point at the start of Space Museum.

If I tried to find continuity holes or just issues in general I would stop enjoying the show. It is a time travel show, it will be weird if nothing changed or there wasn't an error. Unless it is something obvious like the Tardis being purple I probably won't notice too much.
