Orphan Black - Season 2 Discussion

And I guess I was wrong the other week when I thought I heard Rachel address Leekie as "Dad."

I meant to comment on that actually. When I watched that episode for the second time I paid close attention, and she does in fact call him 'Aldous.' Though someone who's not listening closely it could sound like father.

No, that's not what I'm referring to. I did hear her call him Aldous during that conversation, but there was also a point, while she was adjusting Leekie's bow tie, when she said something that I heard as "Dad." Since she used both forms of address (or so I thought), I wondered if maybe the "Dad" was a slip of the tongue on the character's part. But now it seems that I misheard.

Apologies, but that was the moment I meant, because when I first watched it I too thought she said "Dad." I realize I said father in the post you quoted and that was my bad. She clearly calls him Aldous though.

I was more wondering why Cal had a gas mask. Between that and the gun he had stored, there's clearly more to him than meets the eye. And I wonder why the cop didn't get suspicious about it.

Yes though Sarah seems unlikely to hook up with anyone normal enough not to own these things. He did have a weed patch, maybe he's boiling up amphetimines too and needs the mask? But I will be surprised if it's not a clone related activity.

He's all "I am mr national geographic guy, my photos, my cabin.." I'm leaning more towards govco agent than off the grid fringe.

I've been thinking about the Sniper scene a lot lately and rewatched it last night. What the writers have done with Helena this season has been nothing short of amazing. Just the facial close up and the "You make me cry Seestra", followed by the embrace and the "Meathead" exchange really got to me on an emotional level. We know Maslany is great in terms of playing these characters, but these last two episodes she has brought so much emotion to both Sarah and Helena that I really can't wait to see where this goes. I would say both characters have great chemistry with one another, but when they're both played by the same actress, it almost feels like an entirely new level. Having brought back Helena in retrospect has been a blessing for this show, because her arc this season has been fantastic. I really do hope there is a certain genuine-ness to what Sarah said because I'm fully on board with "team seestra".

From what I'm told, on the set, Maslany is actually playing off her double, Kathryn Alexandre. First they shoot a scene with, e.g. Maslany as Sarah and Alexandre as Helena, then they switch wardrobe and shoot the scene again the other way around. And if two clones are touching, like when Helena hugged Sarah at the end of the previous episode, one of them is Alexandre with Maslany's face digitally superimposed. So in a sense they're both creating the performances together -- mostly with Alexandre emulating Maslany's performance, but with some of it probably going the other way too. So Maslany's real chemistry is with Alexandre, though we only get to see Maslany's half of it.

Apparently Alexandre is going to get an onscreen role in the ninth episode of the season, playing a character named Alexis. And if you check her photos on IMDb, there are a lot of behind-the-scenes photos where you can see her sharing scenes with Maslany.

^^^Also if you watch the 'Clonversation' with Will Wheaton (I also believe it's linked somewhere in this thread) they play some footage of Tatiana playing scenes with her double. It's quite striking how much effort goes into stuff that we take for granted :)

^^I know, and they both deserve so much credit. I've even hard that Tatiana thanks her acting double every chance she gets. It really is something else what they are both achieving on this show.

I wonder if they could recut an alternate version of an episode that would include Alexandre's half of the performances and exclude Maslany's. Well, I guess that could only work for scenes with two clones playing off each other, and usually we only see one at a time, so it wouldn't work for a full episode.

When they're Skypeing (Skyping?) with Cosima, though, I'd expect that to be a prerecorded scene of Maslany's being played back on the laptop.

When there is a screen they are talking to someone the computer is never on, it's CGIed in later.

And I think it's Skyping.

You mean on this show, or in general? Actually, these days, I think it's normally real. In the '60s or '70s, a TV picture didn't look good enough on film or couldn't be synced up, so the image was usually matted in. But in the age of HD video, it's entirely feasible to use an actual video feed to transmit a live image of an actor on another set and let the performers converse in real time. Not only is it cheaper than using special effects, but it lets the actors play off one another for real. Heck, even as far back as Space: 1999 in the mid-'70s, they used real video monitors on the sets and fed in live shots of the actors (though usually against a blank background rather than whatever set they were supposed to be on).

I meant in general. It's just easier to have the thing the characters are watching timed out if it's CGIed in later. I remember a West Wing special thing that did it, still 15 years ago but it's just easier time wise.

Now if it's on in the background and not overly important it's probably real time.

Loving season 2 so far - though #3 had one or two too-close-to-home spots - and we get episode 4 tonight in the UK.

But in general, if there's actually a live actor at the other end who can see and hear the actor on the set, than they can time it out the same way they could if they were actually standing next to each other. So there's no reason to waste money on CGI faking a conversation between two actors when they can just have a real conversation.

In this specific case, that wouldn't be an option, but working out the timing wouldn't be any different from what Maslany and Alexandre do when they rehearse and act out both sides of a scene. All it takes is rehearsal time, which is cheaper than special effects.

Yes, they made such a point of showing us the gun that I started to wonder about him too. They ignored the Chekov's Gun trope too, well at least so far.

Aldo - when I read your post re: Tatiana kissing Paul and Delphine, my first thought was, 'Tatiana doesn't kiss Paul and Delphine' and then I remembered. Such is this woman's ability create believable fully fleshed out characters. Frankly, I think a really interesting show could be developed around Helena alone, or Allison. Helena is one of those types who can say or do anything and it wouldn't seem out of character.

BTW, did anyone see the SNL finale Saturday night? At the very end of the show, Andy Samburg, who was the host, was running out a string of thank you's to people and he mentioned Tatiana. I hadn't noticed her on the show. Did anyone else see her?

She was the girl on the cellphone at the beginning of the second SNL Short.

I wonder if Paul is addicted to clone. He's been lucky enough to be with three of them, each very different.

From his description Beth was a cold fish type, Sarah is quite the wildcat, and Rachel is definitely a dominatrix.

I am constantly amazed at the abilities displayed by Tatiana. This girl had better get a best actress Emmy. No one on television deserves it more.

I'm pretty sure there's plenty of actors on television who could do the same thing if given the opportunity. But how many shows require them to play a dozen different characters at the same time in a drama?

True, any actor can play a bunch of diffrent characters in a show, but what would separate them is the quality of the performances. This is what distinguishes Tatiana. Not only does she portray all the characters, she make them all distinctive -- all with their own personalitie, speech patterns, accents, etc, in a way that makes them all seem like they are being played by a different actor. But in addition, she makes them all seem real.

Did you see Dollhouse? Eliza Dushku is a pretty good actor, but all of the characters she played on the show all appeared to be "Eliza" acting like a different character. Mazlany's acting is so good, you don't think while watching the show, "there's Tatiana pretending to be yet another person", all you think is "wow, that Helena is a loon", "damn, Allison is funny", or Sarah and Felix sure do care about one another". I really am a fan of Eliza's but she doesn't have Mazlany's gift.

This is no ordinary acting talent.
