What happened when the top ninety feet of that sword the statue was holding snapped off, and did it hit anyone or anything on the way down?
Absolute stupid bitch. No excuse whatsoever for what she did to him. Absolute bitch. You could really feel the frustration mount in him when all witnesses basically lied and implicated him because of their own power plays but the cake was Shae.. damn if there ever was the personification of a woman scorned.
Also, Oberyn seems like a strange speculation. I hope that's not book spoilers masquerading as speculation.
I just don't understand why Tyrion would care about Oberyn having a chance at his revenge, not in the state of mind he was in when he made the decision to request a trial by combat. Choosing Jaime would hurt his father the most; either Jaime wins and Tyrion is freed, or Tywin loses both of his male heirs. The only problem is that he does care for Jaime, so risking his life would be the only reason he wouldn't choose him. But... he had lost it at that point, too. Also, Oberyn seems like a strange speculation. I hope that's not book spoilers masquerading as speculation.
I haven't read the books nor knew the name of the next episode. I merely thought Tyrion could hit two birds with one stone by choosing Oberyn, Tyrion lives and Oberyn gets his revenge (should Tywin pick the Mountain which he likely would).
Lots happening in this episode. Almost episodic. Lord Varys is perhaps my favorite character after Tyrion.

... the only conclusion one could really draw is that she was forced under duress to go along with this, perhaps with the promise that Tyrion's life would be spared in exchange for her cooperation...

I think Shea is just a scorned woman. Besides, by going along, it would only help Tyrion get the death sentence. That's not something someone would do to help spare them.

So yeah, why would he choose Oberyn? From Tyrion's point of view and current state of mind, in which it's clear he doesn't even really care if he lives or dies.
I haven't read up to this point in the book so the Oberyn/Gregor fight is pure speculation on my part. Imo, it makes perfect sense and I really see no other option. First, like you said, if the challenger is picked first it will almost certainly be the Mountain. He is Tywin's right hand man when it comes to death dealing so he is the perfect choice for that combatant. Tywin could also have another reason I'll get to in a minute. As far as Tyrion's champion, let's start with Bronn. When Shea comes into the trial, the first thing that popped in my head was Bronn was bought off by Cersei and delivered Shea to her. Tyrion is a smart guy and I would assume thinks the same thing. Jamie being chosen would be a death sentence for him and Tyrion knows this. No way he could win a fight in his current condition. Now we come to Oberyn. The moment the Mountain is picked, he'll be jumping up and down wanting to fight to avenge his sister... and Tywin may know this. Tywin knows picking the Mountain will get Oberyn's panties in a twist. This is then a win-win for Tywin. If the Mountain loses, Jamie is at least saved and the Lannister bloodline has a chance to continue. If the Mountain wins, Oberyn is likely dead, who is a threat to Tywin and is now removed. If also gets rid of his disgraceful son. Also, when Tyrion says he wants trial by combat, they cut to Oberyn who leans forward in his chair a little. I think they did this to foreshadow a little. Oberyn also seemed to have maybe a little bit of respect for Tyrion based on their conversations together. This whole idea popped in my head the second Tyrion said he wanted trial by combat and the whole scenario makes too much sense not to happen.Yeah, it doesn't really make sense from the perspective that Tyrion at all gives a shit about Oberyn or his grudge. Chances are that just like at the Eyrie the person against Tyrion will be picked first. And if that is Gregor Clegane, then it might make sense that Oberyn would then volunteer to defend Tyrion. But I don't know exactly how one could have sussed that out without knowledge of the episode title or books.
