So were there lifts in just Shatner's boots or did all the men's boot have heels?

These are Shatner's lift boots. Note that in addition to the extra high heel, the front sole has also been built up. I always thought they should have filmed someone else's boots scrambling up the cliff in order to avoid showcasing Shatner's lifts.

Shatner wore lifts -- but only because he is a little shorter than Kirk was...

...and Scotty had all ten digits...

...and Sulu was the kind of boy a girl would bring home to meet mom....

Those Funtasma boots like something I've been wanting for a while. Could use them for all of my trek costumes.

In brown they'd be good as Malcolm Reynolds' boots in Firefly and Serenity.

I use Alfani boots for my Kirk Duds. In half of the episodes, the pants are worn outside of the boots. In this case, the alfani profile is perfect. Blousing bands hide the fact that they aren't knee highs. I got them for $40 at Macy's on sale.

The pants are outside the boots in all the episodes. Shatner just had a habit of pulling the bloused cuff up higher to look more 'actiony'.

I looked at a lot of pictures to find the 'perfect boots'

In most cases they were low and outside the boots.[IMG]

OK, I know I'm responding to a lot of very old posts in a bumped thread....

Cuban-heeled boots were also stylish in the 60s because some band from England liked to wear them....

Several years back I ordered a pair of replica Beatle boots from a vendor at a Beatlefest. I don't remember exactly what they cost, but it wasn't $800. They'd pass nicely for TOS boots at the bottom, but are substantially lower.

About that height, but a Cuban heel, a much pointier toe, and a smaller, more tucked-in zipper.

If anyone were interested in that style of boot for TOS costumes, googling "Beatle boots" turns up lots of results.

you might also look into "roping boots."

I found a pair about 15 years ago that looked pretty close.

Wow! I guess I will have to parade around as the special barefoot officer.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the Cuban heel largely fall out of use by the last quarter of season one? I know a lot of very early stock Enterprise hallway shots (of crew listing to the P.A.) featured many with that type of boot, but I thought by the last quarter of season one only a few (like the big three) still sported that type (going by season finale "Operation: Annihilate!" as a reference).

During season two, it appears Shatner's stunt boots were not lace-ups, but consistent with the "hero," only they were flat on the bottom for stunt work (see the last fight from "The Omega Glory").

They seem like plain, regular, unstyled black "riding" boots to me. :-)

^^They must have had a few extra dollars somewhere and threw them into the costuming budget for those.

Yes, they were largely gone after the first season. They would nevertheless crop up from time to time. Here's a shot from the third season:

Its possible the boots were unmothballed because heeled boots were more dramatic for the Spock stomping scene than flat heels.
