Orphan Black - Season 2 Discussion

Now all I can see is Leia in her Hoth Outfit.

Same.

Doing an image search for Katja brought me across this page. Now you too can dress up as your favorite clone and join Sarah as she searches for the truth behind the cloning experiments.

Gee, I should be a spokesman.

Being 250 pounds, male and black, i'm pretty sure i'm gonna look weird in that Allison mask.

Then again, i work in a community college, so I've seen stranger...

Nice appreciation of Maslany's performance in New Yorker magazine:

Cheaper By The Dozen
This is what I was saying earlier in the thread, the show's writing is okay but what makes Orphan Black special is Maslany's performances. In the hands of a lesser actor, the clones and therefore the show, would be pretty average.

With the show's premise, I wonder how long they searched for the right actor. I'd say they lucked out mightily unless they already had Maslany and wrote the show in order to take advantage of her extraordinary talent.

In the Cloneversation talk show special last week she talked about auditioning for the role.

While I doubt they ever would release them. I would love to see the auditions of the other actresses and also the actors up for the role of Felix.

It was a big deal when MGM put James Brolin's James Bond screentest on one of the DVDS (subsequent reissues removed the footage).

Colour me curious also (about other auditionees). Didn't WB release the screentests of alt Lois Lanes in original Superman? And then there's the (in)famous Bujold Janeway (yes, I know technically not audition, but still fun to see).

New episode tomorrow night.

I was reading an article about Orphan Black's ratings from TVBTN that was really encouraging.

TV By the Numbers said:
UNPRECEDENTED RISE FOR BBC AMERICA’S ORPHAN BLACK

SEASON TWO PREMIERE

VIEWERS DOUBLE TO 1.58M

HIGHEST LIFT FOR A DRAMA PREMIERE THIS SEASON

New York – April 25, 2014 – BBC AMERICA’s award-winning thriller, Orphan Black, doubled its P2+ and A25-54 audience in Live+3 from Live+SD. The Live+3 audience totalled* 1,577,000 (premiere and three replays over the weekend), including 927,000 Adults 25-54 and 909,000 Adults 18-49.

The premiere, which aired on Saturday April 19, had already recorded its highest-ever A18-49 delivery in Live+SD (391K), and increased 91% in Live+3 to 746,000. Orphan Black is second only to the channel’s highest rated series, Doctor Who, in A18-49.

The Live+3 lift from Live+SD for the Orphan Black season two premiere ranks #1 among all TV drama season premieres thus far in the 2013/14 TV season.

In Live+3, the season two premiere is now well ahead of the season one premiere in all three demos – up 41% in P2+, 52% in A25-54, and 65% in A18-49.

I hope they renew it for Season 3 soon.

If I remember correctly, we were a little under halfway (maybe over?) into the first season before we found out that they renewed it. So I would imagine maybe it's still too soon, I could also be wrong and we could find out by tomorrow that they renewed it :p

I was going to wait till I finished it, but I'm so soon now I may as well post this now. I went ahead and purchased season 1 through Amazon streaming and have been revisiting the show, not really a review because of course everyone knows what I think of it ;) But a few thoughts:

-I can remember when I first started watching the show I didn't quite know what to expect. So when Sarah took over Beth's life and became a cop my heart sank a little because I thought we were going to get another police procedural that tries to pretty it up with few gimmicks (Golden Boy is a good example of this). I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was not the case.

-Helena: she is just a creepy character. I can definitely understand why she's a fan favorite, Tatiana just loses herself completely in the role, sometimes I even forget that it's her.

Cosima: Firs time around I liked her, but this time I'm finding it hard to empathize with her. It just feels like she's knowingly making bad decisions. On the other hand I really like her romance with Delphine, so I guess I don't hate her.

Alison: I can't discuss two of the main characters without mentioning Alison. I can't quite remember what I thought of her the first time through, but this time I'm really loving her. She's definitely trying to fit into the "soccer mom" role that society has defined for us but is having trouble with that and I love it. I can't wait to see what she does next, especially now that we know she's going to reveal the "accident" with Ainsley.

Rachel: As I've mentioned before I think she will be my new favorite character (outside of Sarah, that is). She's just so deliciously evil I love it.

One more thing, as Christopher said earlier in the thread. Every so often you have to remind yourself that Tatiana is handling all these roles, because she does such a great job of portraying each character I can believe it when she's playing off herself (or even two others when their are three or more characters around). My dream scene is to have every clone (I think there are five alive ones, that we know of so far) in the scene together. I'm sure it would be a logistical nightmare but I'd love the hell out of it.

If this isn't clone degeneration, each clone has been given a specific disease that will destroy them and the scientists have been following the decline of each of their subjects since birth.

However... Coughing blood seems to suggest that all the clones that are breaking down from something are most likely breaking down from the same thing.

Another great episode (did we have any doubts? ;) ).

Lot's to digest:

-Tomas is out of the picture now, and Helena is with a different group of prolethians, who seem to want to impregnate her, which should be interesting.

-What we all suspected last year is now confirmed: Donny is Alison's monitor. Ainsley died for nothing. Personally I never believed Ainsley was the monitor, I had a feeling it was just a fake out.

-I was about to take back what I said about Cosima earlier in this thread, but I think after tonight I'll stick with my opinion of her. Knowingly working with the enemy, she may think she has an ulterior motive but I think this is going to come back to bite her in the ass.

-And speaking of Cosima...her scene with Rachel is really the stand out scene (for me) in tonight's episode. There were so many times that I had to remind myself they were both Tatiana (I will never stop singing her praises).

-I'm interested to see where Sarah thinks she's going. At first it kind of bummed me out she was leaving everyone behind, but it's totally in her character to do that. Hell she would have done it in season 1 if she didn't get pulled into Beth's life and not have access to Kira right away.

Last weeks Season opener was fun, but with tonight's episode we really got a sense that things are moving forward, and expanding a lot. Lots of seeds were planted tonight and I can't wait to see what develops from them.

^^^That's right, I guess I totally blanked on that part. Though we both know they're not going to make it (would make for a pretty dull season).

Also I finally watched the season 1 finale again. I had completely forgotten that we found out that Donny was Alison's monitor last year. I guess it wasn't a new revelation tonight. At least now Alison knows for sure...should be interesting to see how this plays out. What i also find fascinating about their set up is that he has been in her life since High School, that's an awfully long time for him to be watching her. I wonder if they pay well?

It's possible that Donny sucks so hard that he doesn't have a real job, and that he (And Allison) completely live off his stipend form Leaky.

They probably hired 10 guys, and sent them all to try and seduce Allison one after the other. And who ever she chose already orders to become her husband and where to live.

Wow, so much to this excellent episode I wonder if I should wait to see what sinks in.

-So glad we found Kira and Mrs. S in the second episode. This allows the show to move on with the bigger picture and the Prolitheans and the Dyad Institute and it really set the direction for Season 2 in motion. I don't know whether or not I trust Mrs. S, but she's become a great character, and a badass at that.

-Speaking of Badass-ness, man the ways they kill characters on this show is amazing. Suicide, Point blank gunshot, (Which was explained in Helena's case really well as to how she survived), Nail pistols to the back of the head, and of course the kitchen disposal pretty much saying to scarves in the kitchen what the movie Sideways said about Merlot :D

-The Proletheans just became a whole lot more interesting with the new bad guy. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of them, and seeing what happens to Helena, to see if she could give birth because of her "impurities"

-I didn't want to agree with Aldo mainly because I now have her as an Avatar (It was the only picture I found of Tatiana actually smiling in the show) but Cosima is so naive. I do wonder though if that's her character. Alison's the Soccer Mom, Sarah is the paranoid Runner (Like Lola in Run Lola Run) and Cosima is the naive scientist, believing that science will give her all the answers.

-Again, everything with Alison in this episode was so much fun, especially the scene in the cemetery.

Looks like next week we finally meet Jennifer. Looking forward to that. Season 2 is off to a strong start.

Awesome! I knew we were getting another clone, though I'm curious if she will appear only in video diaries.

I googled her and found this EW.com page where you can watch her video diaries (some will appear in the episode and some are apparently only view-able on the page). I'm not sure if I want to wait to see these or view them now...ah hell I'm viewing them now.

Damn, I want to see that episode now!

Before the premiere I almost felt like we were getting too much promotional material, but I wonder if it was just right. I mean a lot of the stuff that we've seen (Kira and Mrs. S not being with the Proleatheans, but this other group, Helena coming back) have been great surprises. Still, it's always good when we do meet a new clone, as was the case when we met Helena and Rachael last season.

I'm thrilled that the term "Clone Phone," which is what I've been calling them in my head all along, has now become show canon thanks to Felix.

What i also find fascinating about their set up is that he has been in her life since High School, that's an awfully long time for him to be watching her.

Well, the Dyad created the clones, so no doubt they've all (except for Sarah and Helena) been monitored since birth. It hasn't necessarily been by the same person throughout their lives, but the longer they've known their monitors, the more reason they'd have to trust them and accept having them around.

-The Proletheans just became a whole lot more interesting with the new bad guy.

I'm just glad they got rid of the abusive fanatic Tomas and his "You're an inhuman abomination" hate speech toward Helena. That's bound to be good for her, at any rate.

...Cosima is so naive. I do wonder though if that's her character. Alison's the Soccer Mom, Sarah is the paranoid Runner (Like Lola in Run Lola Run) and Cosima is the naive scientist, believing that science will give her all the answers.

Where did society get this bizarre idea that being a scientist makes one naive? It should be just the opposite. Naivete is accepting things without question, and the whole point of the scientific method is to question everything and take nothing for granted. Skepticism is at the very heart of scientific thought. So if Cosima is naive, it's not because she's a scientist.

What I wanna know is, who do the Proletheans have inside the Dyad? Or who in the Dyad is giving them info?

Someone knew who to send Helena after last year.

I assumed it was Maggie Chen (the one Beth shot). Helena told Sarah that Maggie helped create her. I got the impression that at one point she worked on the program but then got second thoughts and joined the Proletheans.
