Q to IDW NuTrek

Not quite sure what to make of this.
Have there ever been any stories with the Prime Universe Kirk and crew running into Q?

Not Q as in the character played by John de Lancie, but there is a character in Greg Cox's The Rings of Time who is implied to be a member of the Q Continuum.

There was Marvel's Star Trek Unlimited #7, where Q and Trelane switched Kirk and Picard into each other's places (with everyone's memories altered so they wouldn't notice the switch).

It does kind of seems "Angry original Trek-fan" bait-y. "Watch Q validate our spin-off universe."

Angry people assume that everything they don't like is intended to bait or offend them. That doesn't mean it is. Most people are perfectly fine with the Abrams universe, don't feel it needs validation, and would see this as just a natural premise for a crossover, just like any other crossover between two Trek incarnations. (Remember, there have always been angry purists who rejected the validity of every prior new Trek series going all the way back to TAS, and who would've felt just as "baited" by a crossover like Generations or "Trials and Tribble-ations." Back in the '80s there were fans who refused to accept the movies as a valid continuation, and were probably angered to see "their" Khan brought into the "illegitimate" movie universe in TWOK.)

Among those movie-hating fans, Gene Roddenberry himself. :)

The question I would ask is: will the story truly warrant 6 issues?
Well I think 2-issue stories have been largely iinadequate. The Khitomer Conflict was alright with 4 issues. So maybe 6 issues will be the right amount to make The Q Gambit the best IDW Abramsverse story yet.

Of course, the cynic in me suspects IDW is doing a six-issue story to cut down on how many storylines they have to think up at least until they get a clear idea from Bad Robot what Trek XIII's plot will be. Meanwhile they'd biding their time with stories they know definitely won't be the plot for XIII like the crew meeting a gender-switched Enterprise crew, origin story for Science Officer 0718, and now Q hanging out in the Abramsverse.

Oh well, I guess it's a clever tactic to try to avoid continuity errors.

I wouldn't say continuity errors, rest assured XIII will contradict the comics just like STID did. No, they just want to avoid developing storyline which Bad Robot wants to use in the movie.

Am I missing something or is the ongoing comic going on a year long hiatus? Has anyone else noticed this?

ETA: Huh, I guess it's just the TrekToday article that says this is coming out in July 2015. The original articles say nothing to imply they aren't coming out this July.

ETA Again: No actually the original io9 article does say it's coming out in 2015. I'm assuming that's an error that TrekToday picked up on?

I will say that the first part of the storyline is offered in the May PREVIEWS, which means it would be out this July.

2015 in the reporting, then, would be a typo. :)

IMO, that's Orci's main involvement as an "overseer" of the comics.

The blurb on startrek.com says mentions "as the mischievous Q sends James T. Kirk on a quest that will witness the Enterprise joining forces with familiar faces from Trek lore, beginning with the crew of a very familiar space station." while The Trek Collective mentions "A beloved Trek character from the original timeline makes a cameo appearance at the beginning of the story (issue #35) and tries to convince Q to leave the new timeline alone."
Could it possibly be that this story arc will feature Q sending the Abramsverse Enterprise to meet the characters of the classic TV series?

Sounds like it has the potential to be fun.

Is Trelane considered a 'beloved Trek character'? Who else but him would be aware of Q at this time? Oh yeah; Spock Prime, of course. But it being him means he's now willing to break his sworn oath.

His sworn oath was not to tell anyone anything that could affect their future, not don't tell inter-dimensional interlopers to bug off. So I'm not seeing a problem here.

Technically, IMO, his vow doesn't allow wriggle room to meddle at all...

Spock: Mr. Spock.
Spock Prime: Mr. Spock.
Spock: I will be brief. In your travels, did you ever encounter a man named Khan?
Spock Prime: As you know, I have made a vow never to give you information that could potentially alter your destiny. Your path is yours to walk, and yours alone. That being said, Khan Noonien Singh is the most dangerous adversary the Enterprise ever faced. He is brilliant, ruthless and he will not hesitate to kill every single one of you.
Spock: Did you defeat him?
Spock Prime: At great cost, yes.

Appealing to Q not to interfere with this timeline is itself interference, and something he cannot know may have a detrimental effect to the timeline he's trying to protect. Whatever happened to having faith the universe will unfold as it should and why is this universe exempt from that same way of thinking?

Q may have been a pain in picards backside but in the end didn't his meddling eventually help save the prime Universe from being destroyed? Does Spock know and understand this?[ranting]

But, okay. Whatever. This is just the comix, after all.
