Yeah I think it's flown under the radar quite a bit. The reason it's so expensive is has lots of ships, Enterprise, Ent-D, Prometheus, Defiant, Voyager etc, and then Klingon ones as well. It does suck that the Romulan expansion is out of print but there's a Dominion expansion coming later in the year.

It arrived today! I was a bit worried because in a lot of reviews I read people complained about the ships being broken when they arrived, but thankfully mine all seem to be okay!

I'll put up some pics of it when I actually get around to playing it. Some of the ships are Ent-A, Prometheus, Voyager, Defiant, Ent-E, Reliant. The Rotarran is in the Klingon fleet :D.

It's pretty cool the way you choose your fleet, each ship has a size and at the start of the game you choose what size fleet you want, so say it's 10 you might end up with a size 2, size 3, size 4 and size 1, or you could end up with a size 6 and size 4.

yes, brings back memories of childhood.
Found a copy searching through the spare room at my grandparents house. Never found the rules though, and being a kid i just moved the counters around at random.

It's a fun interpretation of the War Of The Roses.

I played Fleet Captains last night. We messed up on a few rules but still had a blast playing it. I was the Federation and my friend was the Klingon Empire. I had the Reliant, Excelsior, Enterprise-A and Voyager in my fleet. I started out well with the Excelsior finding some rare latinum deposit and brought that back to my starbase. The Enterprise-A didn't fare so well however, being caught in a black hole and only just escaping by the skin of its teeth. The Reliant sadly got caught in an alternate universe and got swapped with a ship from that universe, the Yosemite.

That, however, was a stroke of luck because it was a science vessel and a lot of my missions were to make sensor tests in a nebula.

Meanwhile the Klingons were gradually expanding and encountered a mirror universe, which forced us to swap our hands of cards. They also encountered the Nexus, but thankfully that was just on the edge of the galaxy and quickly passed without majorly affecting either of us.

As our fleets moved through space we grew closer and closer to each other. The Klingons cloaked and sent out sensor echos so I wasn't sure which ship was which. The Excelsior made a daring run to try and take on a Bird of Prey and managed to do some damage, but couldn't quite destroy. Big mistake. The Klingons, seeking revenge, sent the majority of their fleet to deal with the Excelsior. I assigned Spock to try and lend his expertise but with three against one the odds were not looking good. The Klingons hit me with a barrage and the Excelsior looked doomed...but in a moment of heroism Spock sacrificed himself to prevent the ship from being destroyed!

However, it was somewhat hollow because the Excelsior was unable to breakaway from the Klingons and the Empire quickly finished the ship off with their next attack.

After the Excelsior was destroyed I was able to bring in a reinforcement so I chose the Prometheus, hoping to use its multi-vector assault mode to fight back against the Klingons but then I completed a senson and engine test on a class-M planet and that won me the game.

Did anyone do anything special for Tabletop day?

^Holy crap! It's like the entire history of Trek (and all its anomalies) compressed into one game! Not that this is a bad thing mind you, I'd love to play the game myself some day.

Yep! And there are so many more encounter cards that we didn't get to (I know for sure there's a Tribble one in there), so I'm looking forward to discovering what else they've included.

Good old days. ;) I'd really like to try Fleet Captains, but I'm not sure if I ever will. The high price and difficult to find expansions are an issue for me, sadly. :/

There's only been one expansion, the Dominion one isn't due out until August.

I've played GW games up until 8th edition Fantasy was released a couple of years ago, quit 40K well before that (during 3rd edition).

Awesome miniatures and background, crappy rules and business model.

5th edition of 40k is out, seems a lot more balanced than what little of 4th I've seen, as for GW's business model, what is putting you off about it?

Pricing would be the first.. they do produce great models but their price model is insane, i.e. far too costly.

In that vein one also has to mention that they adapt the rules to need more miniatures either by lowering the points costs of models between editions so you will have to need more of them to play competitively (very evident in the switch from 7th to 8th edition where you basically needed to double your infantry model count or esle you wouldn't take full advantage of the new rules).

Rules are sometimes very imbalanced.. units exist that utterly dominate the battlefield because they are either too powerful or too cheap, sometimes both (i'm not familiar with current powerbuilds but the Imperial Valkyrie swarm was something that could easily mop the floor with opponents if they didn't play heavy anti-air which almost never happens).

It has become too expensive to start a GW hobby.. if one is to play a standard 2000 points Fantasy or 1500 -1750 points 40K game one needs to invest at the minimum 300$ (and that will likely be a low model count, super elite army) to get it on the table and then you don't have much variation possibilities and are possibly missing some units. When you compare that with other companies you get way more than you need for half of these costs.

No veteran gaming support - once you are an established customer you no longer seem to matter to GW. There is Apocalypse but honestly who plays that on a regular basis? If you play Superheavies or even Titans you either mop the floor with the opponent who didn't bring their own or the game will be decided which ones get destroyed first.. dice rolling with a bucked is not gaming to me.

Specialist Games have long ago been disbanded bit they contained some of the most awesome games GW has ever published, e.g. Blood Bowl, Gothic, Mortheim. They may not produce the revenue desired by GW (or whatever was the reason they buried them) but they are the perfect way to introduce gamers to GW.. low model count so rather low monetary investment, good game design and a good introduction to the GW background. More than one player i know started off with these games and then switched over to one of the main games.

So yeah.. GW is shooting themselves slowly in the foot by pricing themselves out of their customers reach and then they piss off the veterans by designing crappy rules that are imbalanced and easy to exploit for powergaming purposes. Their newest company reports show this by losing nearly 25% value and the closing of many stores and HQs around the world (they closed the main office of GW Germany last year). Problem is that they now have heavy competition with other gaming companies that offer a wide variety of backgrounds from historical to Fantasy/SF and their prices are more on the sane level (sometimes because they require less models sometimes because they are cheaper) so people have started to jump ship or never started with GW to begin with.

    So anyway.. rant over

Tabletop is currently on indiegogo looking for funding for their third season. They've almost hit $700,000, just thought I'd mention it here in case anyone wants to donate, and Wil Wheaton posted this video recently where he talks about some of his hopes for Tabletop and answers questions.

The closest I came was Epic and Titan Legions.
