I'm glad that Ted and Robin ended up together. The Robin/Barney thing never really felt right to me.
And the final insult. No Bob Saget. He spent nine years walking us through the narration and gets absolutely nothing for the final episode where his character actually would have finally appeared and had something to do.
But the thing is, as I see it, "the love story of Ted and Robin" long ago became the story of how Ted and Robin don't work as a couple, something the finale really didn't do anything to address. This show was always, first, the story of five friends in New York City and second, the love story of Ted and Robin.

Um, where did I say otherwise? My point was that this ending does not fit the story they've been telling for a number of years now (but would have fit much better had it come earlier). The show sunk the idea of Ted and Robin pretty comprehensively over the last few years. This was the planned ending all along.
In retrospect, the reluctance of the producers to introduce Tracy as a character makes a lot more sense now, and the producers should probably have stuck to their guns on that point. Which is a weird thing to say, since Tracy/Cristin Milioti was easily the best thing about this season.
Agreed. At around Season 4-5, I was still on the Ted and Robin train. If they had pulled this then, I don't think I'd be as upset. But at this point, I can't stand Ted and Robin. Ted and Tracy had such a perfect story and she was perfect for him and that was the point of the last three or four seasons. Tracy is better for Ted than Robin... so how is it a rewarding ending for 9 years of searching for this woman that Ted just ends up with Robin?
It was firmly established by Future Ted that she never had kids. Pretty convenient. Another clue that she would (or could) fit with Ted's new situation as a widowed dad.Was I the only one hoping that Number Thirty-One was going to turn out to be Robin? Either she miraculously got pregnant with future tech, or they had a surrogate birth?
For me, seasons 4 and 5 were so long ago that I can't say whether or not this ending would have worked there.
^^
Or, a time traveling Bender shoots at him and lights his beard on fire, forever damaging and changing his voice.
Yeah, I kept checking the time code. There was nine minutes left and nothing was resolved and they just kept moving further into the future!

They didn't lock themselves into this ending, just because they filmed it didn't mean they had to use it. They could have chopped it up, adding new dialog recorded by Fonseca and Henrie over shots of old Ted, something like this:Now, I understand that they'd pretty much locked themselves in with this ending eight years ago, when they filmed Lindsey Fonseca and David Henrie's scene back during Season Two, ...
