Interesting memo. It implies that Dr. Serizawa has prior knowledge giving him reason to suspect danger -- perhaps knowledge passed down through his family?
I believe he is wearing a wig in earlier scenes that take place over 15 years ago. The rest of the movie he is not.
Can anyone here think of a way that Godzilla 2014 and Pacific Rim could take in the same continuity? I like the latter and I'll probably like the former, but I don't understand how Guillermo del Toro could propose such an idea?
Movies and TV have been playing fast and loose with continuity for generations. Many crossovers between franchises require disregarding continuity details -- for instance, in The Green Hornet, we saw people watching Batman on TV, and in one Batman episode someone referenced watching The Green Hornet on TV, but then the Green Hornet and Kato actually teamed up with Batman and Robin in one story. For that matter, Godzilla movies have never been that stringent about continuity themselves. They've taken place in at least seven distinct realities that all include some version of the 1954 film's events. Only two of those realities include more than two movies, and those are both fraught with discontinuities and internal contradictions. The two Mechagodzilla films in the 2000s were set in a continuity where Mothra had happened but Mothra vs. Godzilla had not (since a second Godzilla didn't emerge until the '90s in that universe), and yet a character remembered Mothra using an attack that she only used in MvG. So Godzilla continuity has always been highly flexible. In this case, crossing Godzilla with Pacific Rim could be done simply by ignoring PR's statement that the rift opened and the first attacks came in 2013. Just have it happen a few years later. Alternatively, if the filmmakers were concerned about not upsetting continuity-obsessed fans, well, hey, PR already encompasses the concept of a rift between realities, so it would be easy enough to have Godzilla fall through a dimensional warp. Maybe have the characters in Godzilla's universe develop a version of the Dimension Tide weapon (I love that name) from Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, drop Godzilla into a black hole, and have him pop out in the Pacific Rim universe.
I head Edwards and del Toro say that the two franchises had different tones. I think that is true. However, Godzilla has been done in many different tones through the years so it would be pretty easy to adapt Godzilla for the Pacific Rim Universe. Instead of using the new American Godzilla design I suggest, if they are going to do it, that they redesign Godzilla for that crossover movie. I would love to see it but I am not holding my breath.
Yeah, Godzilla is like Batman -- a character who's been approached as everything from solemn tragedy to campy comedy and has been able to adapt across the whole gamut of tones. At first blush, it might seem problematical to go from a movie as dark and somber as Godzilla 2014 appears to be to something more lightweight and fun in the tone of Pacific Rim, but let's look at the first three Godzilla films for comparison. Godzilla in 1954 was a powerful, mature allegory on nuclear destruction and the ethics of WMDs. Godzilla Raids Again in 1955 was a fairly by-the-numbers disaster movie in which allegory gave way to the spectacle of Godzilla battling Anguirus and the military. And King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962 was a wacky comedy for kids with relatively little violence and destruction, since Godzilla spent most of the movie out in the country or the mountains rather than smashing through cities. Admittedly that was after a 7-year gap, plenty of time to cushion the shift in tone -- but just two years later, in 1964 came Mothra vs. Godzilla, which told much the same story as KKvG but with considerably more seriousness and impact. Yet later that same year, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster heralded a return to a lighter tone and the beginning of Godzilla's transformation into a hero, both of which would become the status quo for the next eleven years.
I still like the idea of Cloverfield being the prequel to Pacific Rim. It works almost seamlessly,except of course, wrong ocean.
Yeah, I looked at the first sentence of my own post and started thinking I wanted to see a Godzillacave and a Godzillasignal. The Godzillacave would have a giant robotic human next to the giant penny.
But haven't they already teased the fact they'd like to do a cross-over? Bare in mind this is from the Wiki page, probably bollucks but it would be interesting if they were really thinking of it.

Obviously, the next crossover they attempt after Batman and Superman should be Batman and Godzilla. Have the two of them work together to stop the tag-team of the Joker and Mothra...
