For all we know, this alien isn't the main threat in the episode, and only makes a brief appearance. Or he could be some poor, misunderstood good alien that the Doctor and Clara are helping out. Or he's the threat in a lighter, more comedic episode.

It could literally be anything at this point.

I kinda give that one a pass. Considering the silly tone of the story, I suspect it was meant to look goofy.

    Judoon are awesome.

Going through that list, we are totally overdue for a modernized Garm!

Well, it was designed by a child for a Blue Peter contest.

Probably would have been less annoying if it hadn't been Peter Kay into the bargain...

I want to see the Rutans come back where they fight the Sontarans

This. Though these days we'd likely get a CGI Rutan. Though there is the potential for some creepy mid-transformation makeups.

Really though, I'd love to see the show bring back some of the older, more crap alien designs and do them up properly with modern SFX.
Personally I'd love to see if they could pull off a realistic Alpha Centauri. :)

Well, isn't that the point? Rutans are completely nonhumanoid, basically jellyfish creatures. The one attempt we've seen to realize them onscreen was very disappointing due to the limited technology of the time. CGI would allow a much better-looking creature.

Oh, definitely. That's one that could be a really cool animatronic/suit effect.

Dunno about "without the claws", especially from the second take, but it does look different in Capaldi's hands. Maybe it's the same prop and Capaldi just has bigger hands..?

I hate it when that happens, especially when it is one of those stupid monsters that the doctor and Clara try to help. Classic Moffat, one of the main reasons I hate him, because he does monsters like that all the time.

I still hate it. So glad the claws are supposedly gone but I still don't like the design of it. Doesn't even match the TARDIS anymore.

POINT TO MARK! YAY! Capaldi just has bigger hands. :P

Anyway, There's no particular reason he SHOULD have a new one, is there? t's not like Baker/Davison or Eccelston/Tennant really needed to (and yes, I know in the latter example there IS a difference). It's possible this Doctor just doesn't care, or is waiting for this current version - which may have been in operation for close to a thousand years, for all we know - to expire before building a new one. It may be the longest lived iteration of his screwdriver, so it's definitely a hardy old thing.

Gotta agree. Redesigning the screwdriver for each Doctor just seems silly.

Personally I just wish they'd give the bloody thing a rest.

Also, interesting alien lurking in the doorway. Perhaps our friend from earlier in the thread in his space gear?

At least he puts on his mechanic's clothes before using the screwdriver.

I guess I'm one of the only ones that doesn't mind the heavier use of the sonic in the new series. There may be episodes here or there where they use it a bit too much (like the recent Rings of Akhaten), but overall it doesn't strike me as much of an issue at all.

In fact just like I love the more adoring shots of the TARDIS we've gotten in the new series, I kinda love the extra attention the sonic has gotten as well. Especially since it's such a freakin cool little gadget.

Plus it only makes sense that the Doctor would like to show off a bit.

Never had a problem with the sonic screwdriver myself. Sure, it's a bit silly that it does practically everything (except wood), but which would be sillier, the Doctor carrying one device that can do everything, or the Doctor conveniently having some random device that is necessary to save the day?

I'm sure I've seen the sonic screwdriver work on wooden doors in the classic series.

If Alan Scott's ring has a problem with wood, why not a sonic screw driver?
