Malaysian airliner feared lost..

This is an interesting article from the BBC listing various theories. The notion that the plane could have hidden in the radar shadow of another airliner is interesting.
 
China is a big country likely with large, unpopulated or sparsely populated areas not likely to see a jetliner landing in the middle of the night/at dawn.
If it landed somewhere in China, my bet would be somewhere in Xinjiang region. There is history of terrorism coming from there, in a form of different Islamic groups. They did try to hijack a plane back at 2002 (Tianjin Airlines Flight 7554) but that plot was foiled by passengers and crew. But like before, just speculation.

I would think that hiding in the RADAR shadow of another aircraft would require special training and equipment. Not to mention be risky.
 
So much better than anything else i'd seen. And doesn't require anyone to believe in any nonsense scenarios, evil plots, or the like. Simple, straight forward, and fits.

That's been the worst part of this; the reporting on every conspiracy nut's theory like it's got validity, and encouraging crazier and crazier theories.

This makes sense, takes an easy situation to develop (and has happened before) and you don't have to imagine anyone doing anything crazy. My money's on the bottom of the ocean along the route predicted in the link.
 
On the one hand, the theory is somewhat more comforting than the notion that the plane is in now in the hands of bad guys.

On the other hand, God, imagine what that must have been like for the passengers.
 
Problem is that the timeline is fuzzy on when the transponder and ACARS systems were turned off vs. when the final hand-off occurred. It's a good theory, one of the better and more likely ones we've probably seen so far. And I doubt it's one the governments involved have ignored and not thought of.

Still sort of leaves the question on why the altered route was programed into the flight controller computer rather than manual course corrections either by the yoke or the heading selector on the autopilot. Either of those ways of steering or altering the course of the aircraft likely would have been quicker to do over programming the flight computer.
 
The timeline will be fuzzy until concrete specifics are known. Which is likely never, because the planet is big and the wreckage won't be found for months or years.

As to why the governments involved are so energetically throwing chum into the media feeding frenzy, that's the really interesting question. My best guess: it has something to do with this.
 
There are reports on Malaysian media about a possible sighting of the missing plane, flying very low, above one of the islands of Maldives on the morning of March 8th:

About this Wired article(thanks for sharing btw) of an possible fire on board..I think its plausible theory, certainly. I could actually believe actually more than the "evil terrorist Captain" stuff. But the truth is out there still, with the plane.

Looks like Indonesia has been throwing some bricks to the search "machine" on Tuesday. Seems many planes were grounded because they did not allow them to fly into their airspace:

Ah, one has to love politics sometimes. No wonder they dont find the plane, if its like this. Unless this is an isolated incident.
And if Indonesia has problems, they can always send one their planes to escort the search planes..sigh:vulcan:

The Captain disabled the signaling system on the missing Malaysia Airlines jet before he spoke to Malaysian air traffic control, without hinting at any trouble.

How is the TSA going to screen for this? No Muslim pilots? That’s never going to happen. So we are all sitting ducks until the next time.

It is on one course, turns and goes in almost the opposite direction on a heading which would take it to the US base at Diego Garcia. The plane has 20 technology nerds aboard who happen to work for China designing "classified" leading edge computer/internet control software and are carrying the matching hardware with them on the plane. They are heading to Beijing with all the others. We are shown pictures of muslim looking men as if they are on the plane....setting up the expectation that the plane has been hijacked. Convenient story line so far.

While we are down the rabbit hole this far, lets go all the way. The jet lands by wire at Diego Garcia, the appropriate hardware and software is offloaded as are the nerds. Interrogation proceeds and all the "secrets" you would want to gain from this "intervention" are gleaned from the assets.
You now load everyone back on board the plane and have it take off headed back to where it was supposed to go and at 35,000 ft altitude it implodes/explodes and the debris field is now found. How they missed it in the beginning is a mystery. But the western mindset is already prepared to believe that all things eastern and "Malaysian/Indonesian/Muslim" are barely able to tie shoelaces let alone search an ocean.

So what do you think so far? "Am I right or am I right" spoken in the voice of the nerdy insurance salesman "Ned" in Groundhog Day.

America/Obama gets the information that they want, who cares if a bunch of innocent people have to die (Obama -"I am pretty good at killing people.") and more lies per minute have to fly to cover this huge piece of cow manure over.

Pretty vile stuff there.

As for news-sources on this, I've mostly been sticking with CNN's website on this, other on-line sources are more dubious to me. They seem to be "better" holding pack on speculation or wild theories.

They justify their terrorism through Islam, but it is mostly ethnic in nature since they have no problem calling for the deaths of the Hui Muslims that also live there in Xinjiang.
 
If they had one or two allies at a regular airport, especially a busy one, they could have landed at night, offloaded the passengers and moved the plane to a hangar.

Easier to lose the plane at a busy airport that might see that particular type of aircraft.

There would be all the time in the world to alter the aircraft, for whatever purpose.

See....now I'm doing it.
 
I think speculation at this point is mostly.... fine. Given that it seems that *something* odd happened, obviously, and this wasn't an ordinary crash or anything like that near as we can tell right now and there's just a lot of questions, few answers, and working with agencies and countries not to shar-y when it comes to information. (It took a while before Malaysian officials releases RADAR data to the US which helped open up the investigation more.)

As long as speculation doesn't get too wild like aliens, government dickery, stuff like that. I think the idea of secretly landing this plane to change the livery on it for future use is bordering on that because, again, this is a LARGE plane that's cannot just be landed and taken off from anywhere nor serviced and fueled just anywhere. Simply landing presents a problem of just getting people and cargo off the plane without specialized equipment other than simply using ladders.

The Wired article above probably makes the most sense. Something catastrophic happened while/after the plane entered a "null area" between air-traffic controllers, this catastrophe necessitated or caused the loss of the various tracking systems on the plane, but the pilot was still able to reprogram the flight computer to head for the nearest airport that could accommodate the plane. They didn't make it and crashed and we simply haven't found the wreckage yet because the area is so vast.

There's still a lot of oddities in even that theory but I feel this is probably going to end up to be a very, very mundane thing and not nearly as radical as someone elaborately making a plan to steal this plane, repaint it, and then take it somewhere to be used in a future attack.

There's still a LOT of questions here, though.
