Episode Swap

YARN

Fleet Captain
Pick an episode from one franchise and speculate how it would play out in another.

EX: Year of Hell - TOS-Style

Spock would have the Chakotay role.

McCoy would have the Paris role.

They would both be abducted and debate what to do about Annorax. Annorax played by Lorne Greene?

Enterprise would have to travel through disputed territory to deliver medical supplies on time or something like that and get trapped as an element in Krenim space.

TOS didn't do two parters, so everything would have to be wrapped up in 50 minutes.

TOS didn't feature outer hull damage, so we would see the same bent pipe we saw in Doomsday Machine re-dressed for each deteriorating interior shot.

Without McCoy on board, Kirk would need someone else to stand up to him (or have this action play out before McCoy and Spock got abducted). Nurse Rand could step up and order Kirk to sleep or (more likely) Kirk might but heads with Scotty over what he was doing to the ship.

No escape pods on the TOS Enterprise that we know of and the couldn't do the FX for it anyway, so Kirk would probably beam the remaining crew down to a planet only to see them "erased" from time.

The upside is that you could play up Kirk questioning his command abilities vs. responsibilities (the weak spot of his ego) and McCoy/Spock dynamic on the Krenim ship.

A downside is that without a two-parter, you would not really get a sense of the "grind" the crew was going through.

I just watched "The Measure of a Man" and think it would be a great episode for Voyager. Given that the crew wouldn't have access to Starfleet's JAG office, I suspect Janeway would preside over the hearing as acting judge, with Chakotay and Tuvok acting for the defense and prosecution, respectively, with the Doctor's sentience as the primary issue.

The overlying situation would be different, as the Doctor wouldn't be subject to Starfleet transfer orders, but perhaps a situation in which his status as a hologram (and property) is called into question could still arise. Maybe he tries to have a research article published and is denied on the basis of his not being human. I think it would be a great new look at an outstanding episode.

And Measure of a Man in DS9: Data is about to lose the trial and Sisko finds the heirs to Dr Noonien Soong and argues that if it is decided that Data is property, then he would in fact be their property, not his, and holds this over Maddux's head to threaten him into dropping the case.

And Tribunal in TNG: Picard convinces Cardassia to change their entire legal system and introduce the concept of innocent until proven guilty and due process.

Hard Time in TNG: Gene Roddenberry declares that O'Brien would never kill a fellow inmate for hiding food, even after 16 years of simulated torture, and now in his vision O'Brien convinces his captors to treat the prisoners better.

Best of Both Worlds in Enterprise: The Borg wear skin tight body suits, and they assimilate Archer by making out with him in decon. The Borg turn out to be agents from the 28th century sent back to destroy Earth in the 22nd century to stop men from the 25th century from killing their children in the 31st century. Then Trip invents the holodeck.

I don't mean to hijack your post, but wouldn't this constitute breaking the Prime Directive? Cardassia is a sovereign power, and interfering in their legal proceedings would seem a violation of the Federation charter.

Like I said, a TNG style episode. ;)

^No, it's not. It would be out of character for Picard.

And why would Data be on Deep Space Nine?

First, Picard refuses to influence other cultures by force, not by example.

Second, Picard has violated the prime directive on several occasions because it led to a morally preferable outcome. Justice, Pen Pals, Devil's Due, Masterpiece Society, Who Watches The Watchers, Symbiosis, and that's just scratching the surface of cases where he influenced another culture because he felt the situation warranted it.

Third, if you have a problem with interpreting this thought game by putting a character in a different series, you're entitled to your opinion, but it is one I do not share.

Fourth, HOLY CRAP this thread is supposed to be for fun, you're really getting nitpicky and critical about this? How about you contribute your own examples instead of personally confirming every Trekkie stereotype known to man.

I'd like to see the first episode of Voyager done in TNG. I have a feeling Picard and company would have gotten home the same day. I also have a feeling the Ocampans would have came back with the Enterprise.

What say we all sit down with a cup of a Klingon Blood Wine, and watch JJversions and play "Lens Flare!"

Yes?

Now THAT would be Magna-Cool!...hmmmmm....which ship?

I thought this thread was about swapping television episodes. Since a movie could be considered an extended episode, they count but I'd pick the Enterprise D anyway. I'd rather it feel like a TNG episode than an epic (and a bit over the top) TNG movie.

If you are referring to my JJ comment, I was just trying to calm the rifts in space-time that were occurring backthread...seems to be more stable now... ;)

Boy, I am back and forth on -D or Voyager...I remember liking the hell out of V's design when I was watching it...

Yesterday's Enterprise with a mixed crew. The premise is that all swapped characters acts and behaves just like the characters in the original episode.

Keep Picard as Captain. (maybe Sisko, but nobody gives a speech like Picard) Chakoteh as Riker.

Janeway as Captain Garret and Riker as Lt Costello.

Troi as Gunain. Dax as Lt. Yar, but as a security guard. (her hair is cut different too)

Seven of Nine as Data. Harry Kim as Geordi. Kes as Wesley Crusher character.

Everything plays out like the original with some added scenes.

Doomsday Machine TNG-Style

Capt. Jellico loses the Cairo to the Doomsday Machine.

Riker gets confined to quarters.

Data follows orders, but threatens to step in if Jellico doesn't break off a suicidal attack.

Picard stuck with Geordi on the Cairo.

This would be the more "macho" version of the Captain Ahab type guy Spinrad originally had in mind.

They probably defeat the machine by doing something with the navigational deflector (it is, after all, TNG).

TNG's "Arsenal Of Freedom" as done through TOS. I even wrote that story which I called "The Forgotten Merchants."
