Series 8 will be darker, more like Classic Who

Another site is claiming there's a possibility John Simm will return. I guess both are possible, Simm could come back for a regeneration scene and then a new guy would take over.

I came across an interesting rumor today...

Charles Dance will be the Master. And he's instrumental in the Doctor's new regenerative cycle.

Oh, that would be awesome. :)

It came from a fan-spec set of episode synopses several weeks back, so I'd be inclined to doubt there's anything in it!

while him having something to do with the doctors new regenerations and just having the master back in Doctor Who is great, I'm not quite on Charles Dance being the Master. I don't want both the Master and the Doctor just to both randomly be the same age all the time. The 3rd Doctor and his Master were similar ages, Tennant and Simm were of close age and now it looks like Capaldi and his Master might be. Still, as long as Dance has a beard then I'll be moderately happy. My first choice for the Master however would be Ben Miles. He looks dashing with or without the beard and he also could easily pull off the Master, he has the look and the feel. Plus he'd be a suitable age.

However it could also be fun to see a younger Master say "well look at the state of you" to Capaldi and mock his age. Maybe we could have a cameo from Simm and see him regenerate. ;)

I wouldn't mind Simm coming back. Anthony Ainley was the Master for multiple Doctors. Why not Simm?

Provided Simm tones it down a shade, of course. But I'm sure he can.

In general, I agree, we shouldn't change the Master every time the Doctor changes. However, as much as I like John Simm, maybe it is time to move on to another Master? Simm's story arc is essentially done, and while there is plenty you could still do, where the Master is currently at is a good jumping off point for another actor. Besides, logically, the only cure to the Skeletor affliction is a regeneration anyway. That and wasn't Simm's favourite perk of the job that he enjoyed working with Tennant? Granted, he could just easily enjoy working with Capaldi.

I doubt "toning it down" would be a problem for Simm, since he said it was primarily RTD who wanted him to be all manic and crazy.

Why not be a little innovative and have the Doctor deal with a YOUNGER Master? By that, I mean a Master thats pre-Delgado, regeneration-wise. Wouldn't that be fun for a change?

^ I once thought of that too. But isn't there something about their timelines being intertwined, so that the Doctor can't meet a pre-Delgado Master, just as any recent incarnations of the Master couldn't meet Hartnell or Troughton?

^ Multi Doctor stories find their way around that. Pertwee met Ainley in the Five Doctors.

And until the Timelords come back, they can't prevent stuff like that happening.

And it could be a mystery for the Doctor, how and why will the Master not remember dealing with this older, regeneration-wise, Doctor when he'll become Delgado. In fact, that might even give the Doctor the incentive to prevent the Master from dying, so as to preserve the timelines.

I'm rather dissapointed they didn't follow this idea for the Eighth Doctor's Dark Eyes series and instead went with the new-regeneration-cycle. I mean, how likely is it that the Master has crossed paths with the Doctor since his 12th incarnation (or 11th, as I count the War Chief as that), but not at all PRIOR to then? You can excuse this by saying they HAVE but we haven't seen it, but I wouldn't buy that.

A fun storyline would be the Doctor meeting the first or second Master (for example) before he became "evil" and was actually quite a nice guy. Really, a origin story would be great and I mean one better than the "he went a bit mad because he kept hearing drums" that RTD wrote. I'd like a full on origin with maybe the Doctor watching or just a separate thing without the current doctor and maybe even without any doctor. I'd like the Master to start off as a good person, someone honest but constant tragedy and corruption among the ruining his like or something and that could push him over the edge and then he becomes a renegade. You know, something a bit Hal Jordan Parallax if you will. ;)

Unfortunately though, this will probably never happen.

Check out the Audio story from Big Finish Master. It's one of the first 50 Mainline, so, it's only 2.99 for download, and has 4 episodes (just like a classic Tom Baker Length Serial). It's got some talking flashbacks that I think are a great Origin story

Ok thanks, I'll check it out! ;)

Been there, done that.

Yes, but by then the Master is already in his 13th incarnation and it's a book.

No he isn't, and yes it is, respectively.
