At that point, isn't it really just down to: Can he PLAY? If he's any good, then absolutely, yes. If not, doesn't matter if he's Queer Eye or Marlboro Man, he can't help the team.

Like I said, a non-clusterfuck of a team won't have a problem with this, and can deal with the attention and deflect/make it a non-issue. A mediocre or bad team will get eaten alive by this, there will be instant hazing stories, fighting in the locker room, all that nonsense.

If teams pass on a good player due to fear of media puff pieces, they deserve what they get, and it's likely not even in the top 5 of fuckups they'll make this offseason. If they take him just BECAUSE of the media attention (and he can't play), just as big a mistake. Jackie Robinson's story was only interesting because he was good. Otherwise, you just get a Tebow to the Jets level of media circus, and a 3rd string QB dominates your storylines and tears apart your locker room and leadership...

Sam was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year this past season and was an integral part of a Missouri team that went to the SEC championship game. I think it's clear that he can play.

I can see teams with their heads on straight taking him, like the Patriots, 49ers, or Seahawks, but the majority of teams will shy away from him because of the media attention drafting him would bring. But I suspect there will be some team out there dumb enough to draft him just for the headline. Sounds kind of like something the Jets would do, actually...

And Tebow wasn't too shabby at Florida; it's a matter of whether he can make the jump to Pro ball. In the NFL, he's a little undersized for DE, and not a natural LB. Not to say he can't figure it out, it's just not a slam dunk case of a clear 1st rounder falling to the 4th because he's gay. This may make him fall a little further than he would otherwise, but he'sa 3rd or 4th rounder and a little bit of a projection/project at this point.

And like the nonsense with Manti T'eo last year, someone that can figure it out might get a bargain...

Scout already beat me to it, but the counter-example is Tebow with two national championships, SEC records, and a Heisman under his belt. But even then, there were the questions about his technique and arm strength in the pros.

Despite all this, Tebow was still rated a 2nd round QB (and ultimately went in the 1st). Sam is projected 4-5th round. He's a special teamer.

Green Bay doesn't draft and trade based solely on the weather conditions, but it is does come into play. Minnesota on the other hand, structured their team to optimize the playing indoors. And they can't really change that just for the two years they'll be outdoors waiting for the new stadium to be finished. It should be an interesting few years.

Sports broadcasts are typically known for their punchy lists of best plays, epic goal countdowns and testosterone-fueled commentary.

Which makes Dale Hansen's address Monday night all the more remarkable. The Dallas sports anchor for ABC local affiliate WFAA took a break from the standard script to address the issue of Michael Sam, a defensive lineman poised to become the first openly gay player in the NFL.

The approximately two-minute segment, titled "Hansen Unplugged: Celebrating Our Differences," opens with a joke about Sam's "shocking" circumstance -- that he's the "best defensive player in football's best conference," yet only a third to fifth-round NFL pick ("Really?!?") -- before adopting a more serious tone and addressing Sam's critics and haters alike.

In particular, Hansen focuses on athletes who are deeply destructive to the world and people around them, yet are still revered for their on-field performance:

"You beat a woman and drag her down a flight of stairs, pulling her hair out by the roots? You're the fourth guy taken in the NFL draft. You kill people while driving drunk? That guy's welcome. Players caught in hotel rooms with illegal drugs and prostitutes? We know they're welcome. Players accused of rape and pay the woman to go away? You lie to police, trying to cover up a murder? We're comfortable with that."

Hansen then drives home the hypocrisy: "You love another man? Well, now you've gone too far!"

"I'm not always comfortable when a man tells me he's gay; I don't understand his world," Hansen adds later. "But I do understand that he's part of mine."

Sam was a 3-5 round pick prior to his announcement.

That's not to say he's not a great player or that he wouldn't be a great addition to a team regardless of his status, but it is to say that there are ~150 other college athletes turning pro this year that would be better additions to teams.

Minnesota is in a rebuilding mode anyway right? If they draft/trade for tougher players in the next couple years, that can't hurt once they're back indoors.

Third to fifth round still means he's getting drafted and probably playing in the NFL, probably an OLB in a 3-4 system. That alone makes him different from Tebow. People probably would have considered Tebow for some position other than QB.

People still do. If Tebow wants a shot in the NFL, he has been offered numerous times a contract if he was willing to play FB or TE or some other position that doesn't throw the ball. It's clear that Tebow is a big, physical guy with pure athletic skills, he just can't throw. He just declines to accept those offers, believing he's an NFL-caliber QB. He would have been worth the late 1st round pick he was taken with if he would only convert.

Guys like Manning and Brady are able to play QB well past their mid-30's precisely because they can throw. Guys who never learned to throw properly watch football on TV on Sundays.

So the Wells report came out today with findings of shit that is somehow even worse than I expected. The only response I have to the people who talk about this kind of behavior being common place in a football locker room is this, Missouri Tigers locker room > Miami Dolphins locker room.

Publisher of the Los Cerritos Community News plagiarizes this commentary, then when he gets busted, the paper tries to claim that Dale Hansen's name was inadvertently left off.

Texans new head coach Bill O’Brien and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel sound pretty good on paper for the Texans. O'Brien is not hiring an offensive coordinator the first year. He says Crennel is running the defense and he's running the offense.

Sounds like when Kubiak ran the offense and Wade Phillips ran the defense. It will certainly be interesting to see what Kubiak does in Baltimore as the offensive coordinator. I'll be keeping an eye on the Ravens this coming year. Poor ole Wade Phillips apparently isn't getting any calls. He's said publicly several times he wants to get back into the NFL and coach.

Rumors, being what rumors are, are saying we're going with Clowney with our 1.1 picking and picking up the best QB available in the 2nd. The Texans have been publicly active in interviewing free agent QBs. Schaub's a goner if anyone wants him.

The last time the consensus worst owner in sports, Bill Wirtz, died, the Chicago Blackhawks went on to win two of the next six Stanley Cups.

Maybe Lions fans can get a similar reprieve.

Adios DeMarcus Ware. One of my all time favorite Cowboys but this was a no brainer. Somebody is going to pay him a lot of money and probably regret it. I'm hesitant to congratulate Jerry until I see what he does with the cap space this move created.

6 years, 57 mil for Talib? Enjoy that...

I guess it could make sense for a year or two, if you ignore the injury history, but why are they signing 6 year deals when the Broncos have a window of 1, maybe 2 before they're rebuilding and looking for a QB again?

Jonathan Martin has found a new home and it is with old coach Jim Harbaugh. Good for him. Hopefully he can make a fresh start of things over there.
