Ship Design I'm Fleshing Out...

OK, in lieu of Flux's hatred for my nacelles design, I tried it in a more traditional way. However, I will say this...I've been a Trekkie since the 60's but I do not take certain tech overly serious. It's a TV show...a form of escape...and, in my opinion, open to fun interpretations and some creative license. That being said, I like both nacelle designs I used. What will end up on the final version is yet to be determined.
It's your project, so you should definitely go with whatever design you prefer. Personally, I always thought Star Trek could use less glowing details on their ships. At a point it just looks to me less like working parts and more like purely decorative do-dads like some people put on their cars. I always liked how the TMP era ships got rid of the red-glowing bussard collectors, and the blue warp grills generally only glowed while the ship was at warp.
Please don't change your design because one person is against it! TrekTech changes all the time in the series and movies as well, so if you feel the need to do it the way you liked it, go for it! 
Some new form of bussard intake is as good enough an explanation as any.
Some people are a bit to anal when it comes to TrekTech, and when some people don't adhere to what they percieve to be the only possible way it should, they can be a bit overzealous. No offence to Flux Capacitor, but if you want to do it with YOUR design, frekking go for it mate!!!

Yeah, I think the gradient thing was cool. To me, it looks like a progression from whatever was going on with the Excelsior's nacelles which had the continuous banding.
I agree that a bunch of light-up parts seems dumb to be, but Hey, it is what it is. Trek has certainly embraced glowy bits so no reason not to include them.
For a tech reason, given the seemingly increasing use of holography, perhaps this is a radical new design that has a solid shell and guts, but much of the hardware between those two elements is actually holodeck type forcefields and such which allow the bussard collector area to be ramped up or down depending on the ship's current needs. In the event of a power failure involving these forcefields, the solid internals can operate at a default mode and get you home, but without the fine control and increased efficiency the holographic engines allow.
This seems like a silly idea to me, but given ho holographs seem to work in the late 24th Century, and given some of the other more fantastic ideas presented in Trek... I don't see why not.

It seems that my words are being taken a bit wrong. I don't *hate* the gradient. I prefer to go without it, but I'm not saying you shouldn't use it. After all, I did say...
It's fine to use it, but IMO when you're designing a piece of technology and are going outside the established norm, a good design will have a purpose behind it and not simply because it looked kewl. The same goes for ships with 5 nacelles or 300 torpedo launchers.
