Ship Design I'm Fleshing Out...

Ensign Ro-

Commander
Red Shirt
Hi All,

I had an image for a starship in my head and decided to try and flesh it out. I only have the profile for now. As you can see it borrows from several eras plus my own little twists. It obviously is composed of the very familiar layout. Just curious what some of my fellow Trek fans thought. Please keep in mind this is the very first "sketch" of my idea. Drawn using CS5 and saved as a PNG. :-)

Nice, only a few gripes:
1. If you're having the secondary hull as low as it is, then the swoosh into the underside of the saucer feels like it needs to be either further back or more of an angle.
2. The pylons looks too far forwards for so low on the secondary hull.
3. I'd push the nacelles back on the top of the pylons.
All my opinions of course!

Love the shape of the engineering hull and the top of the saucer. Illustrator is a great piece of software for this. I did a starbase the other week.

Thanks for the comments and input. During my work breaks today I made some changes. I'll post an update soon.

you need to put a physical divider between your bussard collectors (red) and your warp field grills (blue), having your intakes merge into your exhaust is confusing and designorifically questionable :)

Other then that, if you want to keep the saucer and hull that far apart, you'll need to enlarge the saucer's radius to make it more balanced.

Is the saucer elliptical or circular or other?

That's the new hotness these days. See Fuzzymodem's Enterprise F.

Nice design btw. Look forward to seeing it progress.

Without actually measuring it, my mkI Eyeball calipers are telling me that the pylons in the top image don't line up with the pylons in the bottom image.

Maybe it's a weird optical illusion?

If your image program has horizontal and vertical guide lines you can drag around, try setting some of these down and seeing if the two images really do line up...

You're right. They were roughed in.

Got the pylons lined up properly. Still a lot to do. And, heck, I'm not even sure where in the timeline this might fit. ;-)

Just my opinion, but I think the nacelles should be a tiny bit wider at front (top-view). Not sure I like the crease down the back of the secondary hull. On the other hand, I do like the red-fades-to-blue on the side. I saw where someone said you need a hard divider between them, but I think it looks great as is.

Another small update. Still wondering if I want the front view of the secondary hull to have a circular shape or more oval. I plan on mounting the torpedo launchers each side of the deflector dish.

No, but IMO when you're designing something that is supposed to fit into a given universe, it is good for things to make sense. If I whipped up a ship design that is a Federation cruiser with rainbow-painted hull I'd bet I'd be asked for an explanation. The same goes for nacelles that for some reason have a gradient between two established pieces of technology. If you're going to do it, fine...but explain it and give what you've done some purpose.

For the intake to blend into the exhaust somehow? I don't know, doesn't make sense to me. Might also be because I'm not a fan of how it looks aesthetically, either.
