Fellas…are there "girlie" things that you like/enjoy?

I just posted a link, in TNZ, about a young boy that recently attempted suicide after enduring intense bullying for liking My Little Pony.

Now I'm not a fan of the show, but it reminded me that when I was a kid in the 80s I really liked Jem (which admittedly was situated on the schedule between 2 "boys" shows). It certainly was not something that we talked about in school when discussing Transformers or GI Joe, but years later I learned that quite a few young men my age actually quietly watched and enjoyed the cartoon.

Recently a female friend of mine lamented the fact that so many of her male friends and associates have traditionally shied away from things that appear too feminine. She even noted that advertisers will be sure to make alternate versions of ads if they get concerned that the product is too closely associated with women.

It got me thinking, are there things that guys here like or enjoy that are traditionally associated as being for women/girls?

 

FYI, this will not end well. I know you may have good intentions, but this topic has never really gone smoothly on the board, which is why it tends to stay in TNZ.

 

I like The Powerpuff Girls. Does that count?

I got hooked on General Hospital for a while, back in the 1980s.

I like Touched by an Angel.

Are these things girlie enough?

 

I don't like any "girly" things.

Seriously, though, I like a ton of things that are only "supposed" to be for girls. One of my favorite colors is pink, I love shows like My Little Pony, I put pretty glittery stickers on my phone, I use lotions that use flowery, "feminine" scents. When I was a kid, I played with My Little Ponies, and Barbie dolls. I don't have gender boundaries. I like what I like, and it doesn't bother me one bit to cross over what I feel is an imaginary line, to enjoy something that I'm not "supposed" to like.

 

Can we just go ahead and stipulate that by "girly", we mean things that are primarily marketed toward girls and women?

I like MLP:FiM, but not religiously - I'm a casual Brony. And I consider Jem to be almost as important to my adolescence as Transformers, and slightly more important than G.I. Joe.

 

There are a couple of songs by Britney Spears that I like.

"Girlie" is in some sense subjective, but I would say that they are things that are traditionally associated with or directed toward women and girls.

Soap Operas, like GA, are usually associated with stay at home moms and women. I would think that counts.

I may be wrong but weren't the PPGs targeted toward girls as well. They certainly count.

Not sure about Touched by an Angel. It was more of a "family" show and not necessarily gender specific. Sort of like Seventh Heaven.

Jem was kind of awesome. While admittedly wrapped in purple and pink, it was clearly a scifi show. The animation in the opening credits is actually pretty amazing for the time and really it was the perfect introduction for kids into the world of MTV.

 

I bake cakes fairly often, does that count?

I like/enjoy girlie parts. Does that count?

I remember when I was a very young child, when I would see commercials for dolls with functional features—wetting themselves, talking, crying, etc.—I always wanted my sister to get those dolls so I could see how they worked. (She, alas, had no interest in such things.) My expressed interest in those dolls may have raised an eyebrow or two, but I was only interested in the mechanical design.

 

i always though She-Ra was better than He-Man. and i loved Jem and the Holograms as a kid. still do actually. never had any of the dolls for either.

 

Is baking/cooking still considered a feminine thing? I do know that there was a time when it was thought of like women's house work…but given that almost all of the major chefs on TV (including the bakers) are men…is this stereotype still a thing?

 

She-Ra certainly had better music. Of course in retrospect, She-Ra was probably the more "masculine" between that and He-Man. Honestly, how did we all miss the fact that Prince Adam was totally gay

I think you're mostly right, in that much of gender preference is based on arbitrarily and manufactured societal gender stereotypes. However, there is some fairly strong evidence that, generally speaking of course, much of it is also a product of nature.

Anyway, my brother-in-law loves "girly" pampering. When he and my sis visited me in NYC we all got our eyebrows threaded and did face masks and manicures together.

 

When I was a young child back in the '80s I watched My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite and Care Bears. I tend to be drawn towards "girly" things even to this day, although growing up with 3 older brothers and a masculine father made it very hard for me to express that side of me. It would probably explain why I was a very shy child and always had such a hard time making friends. Now I'm 31 and I've made small progress, but I'm still nowhere near as open as I'd like to be.

I always preferred "For the Honor of Greyskull" to "By the Power of Greyskull" as an activation phrase for the power sword.

 

I like horses. Not My Little Pony, but real horses. I guess this is debatable -- John Wayne liked horses -- but my appreciation of them often takes the form of me stopping to think "Ooooooh, look at that pretty horse."

 

I like music. Is that girly?

I also have a thing for programming computers. Pretty sure that's a guy thing.

 

I enjoy a nice hot bubble bath every once in a while.
