The location shots show that he's still got the bling on his ring finger while actually shooting. So this IS a thing, and it may require a bit of exposition when he puts it on. Mayhaps an effort to keep every companion from kissing him at some point. :P

^ Maybe he's finally ready to take his marriage to River seriously.

Yeah a lot of people found Smith's first costume pretty drab and boring at first too, but once we saw him actually moving around in it, it suddenly looked completely perfect and natural on him.

And even then they were able to refine the look later with a nicer looking tweed and a whiter shirt. I'm sure we'll see the same thing happen with Capaldi's outfit over time.

I wonder if there's an article or site somewhere covering the evolution of the various Doctors' costumes. That seems like the sort of thing someone would surely have written about. I know some of the costumes evolved over the years. Pertwee had multiple outfits along similar lines. Baker had a variety of different looks, including a couple of differently-colored coats, and sometimes donned special outfits like the Sherlock Holmes-style gear in "The Talons of Weng-Chiang"; and then in his final season he was put in an all-maroon version of his usual ensemble. McCoy changed to a darker coat later on. But others, like Davison and Colin Baker, seemed to maintain a pretty uniform look throughout. I think Hartnell and Troughton did too.

^ I think only started with Davison - McCoy where a Doctor had a standard costume. Before that, I think it varied and wasn't so set in stone. A JNT thing, at least during the classic series.

Well Baker's final outfit was probably the first 'uniform' type outfit, at least we've got past that. I wonder how Eccleston's look might have evolved if he'd stayed in the role?

I could imagine Eccleston ditching the V-Neck shirts. Maybe go for a granddad T shirt or something (a T shirt with buttons). Maybe get a different coat. Something along those lines.

Hasn't he already caught up to the point where she's kind of deadish.

It's not like she was his first wife. (Since it was the 60's,) I'll assume he was married on Gallifrey, had a kid who had Susan.

How did Hartnell's or Troughton's outfit change? Sure, Hartnell often adopted period clothes, like in "Marco Polo" and "The Reign of Terror," but his basic costume seemed pretty standardized, as did Troughton's.

I thought Tennant's look was a bit like a Mod, while Smith's final look, with the coat and his hair, made him look like a Teddy Boy/Rocker.

Oh, of course. I should've known Alan would have it covered. Still, it's more an overview rather than a more detailed catalog of how the Doctors' costumes evolved, which is what I was hoping for.

^Except it doesn't seem to cover the first two Doctors, which are the ones I'm most curious about at this point.

It's generally assumed his wife was human, since although Susan has an immense intellect similar to a Time Lord, she was human and has since passed on after one life.

It could be that his wife was Gallifreyan, and that their child married a human who had Susan after that, but I think it's likelier his first family was entirely human.

But his wife and apparently Susans parents seem to be dead by the pilot episode so we'll probably never know.

And he has at least 3 wives then, Susans grandmother, Elizabeth the First and River. All 3 are dead by the "present day" or leading edge of the time stream.

Or maybe we're assuming wrong, that it's a mourning ring rather than a wedding ring.

We don't know one way or another what Susan's fate was/is, or if she is still alive.

Since the Doctor took her with him from Gallifrey, I would assume she's fully Gallifreyan.

I'm holding out hope we'll see her again.

He also supposely married Marilyn Monroe too and the first Doctor's ring was Roman in origin the third Doctor also wore it so it might be the same one.

Where does any of this come from? All we know is that he left Gallifrey with his Grand Daughter Susan in-tow

We have no indication, why she's with him, so no way to surmise about parents.

We have no indication she has died nor that she is Human
