Lots of gay men are married to women, for any one - or combination of - reasons. Lucas would, by no means, be the first - if that, in fact, is what's going on ...

Your evidence that Lucas might be secretly gay is that he doesn't understand women? Do you mean to say this lack of understanding is defining trait of gay men? Because that's a fundamental implication of your statement.

Better to simply say: Based on how he's written the prequels, Lucas doesn't seem to understand women. There's still an inherent generalization to it, but it's a more valid point of view - one that I completely understand. The way you've phrased it, though ... it's a bit inflammatory and devalues what had been, to that point, a relatively thoughtful, interesting discussion and debate.

Well, I will join battle about the podrace sequence another day. But for 2takes, just to break it down for you:

    1. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with understanding women.
    2. Writing ability has nothing to do with understanding life (any more than that someone who can't draw is necessarily blind).
    3. Insofar as sexual orientation might affect the potential of understanding women, gay men are generally better-placed to understand women than straight men are in many ways (on account of sharing certain shortfalls of privilege with many women).
    4. Speculating about Lucas' sexuality is a ridiculous distraction from what would otherwise have been a decent post.
    5. The frame you are probably looking for is that Lucas writes relationships poorly.

As I have no direct evidence - to say nothing of proof - that George Lucas is a homosexual, I retract the statement, unreservedly.

My only criticism with it is that it takes too long for Williams' music to kick in. I get the decision to allow Ben Burtt the opportunity to showcase is sound-design-fu, but the result is that when the music kicks it, it feels out of place and overly melodramatic.

On the other hand, the Flag Parade cue, just before the race, is one of my favorites in the Saga.

Or for the sake of continuity, since she's apparently dead as a doornail by the time of the OT.

Padme had just seen the fall of the Republic, she's been told that her husband has betrayed the Jedi and killed younglings and he just tried to kill her. And while many women do in fact love their new born children, many women also develop postpartum depression and in Padme's case it would seem to be justisfied.

You can also see the long distance connection between Padme and Anakin in the scene just before he leaves the temple to save Palpatine. She appears to looking at him in the temple as he's thinking about Palpatine's words about saving Padme's life.

Post partum depression? Like 2 minutes after the birth?

I really liked that scene. Very powerful. It does hint at a more psychic, or Force-based connection between Anakin and Padmé.

    Plus Williams' music is haunting.

    Good stuff.

Rorschach inkblots are so interesting, aren't they!

    This.

The word regarding the birth scene that came to my mind was "sterile".

If we're going with a Force-related cause, could it be that giving birth to the "Chosen One"'s twins took something out of her Force-wise?

It always reminds me of Logan's Run, not to slam an excellent movie but that is not the feel the scene needed.

I think it's safe to say that Lucas ripped off many movies, throughout the STAR WARS saga - including DUNE. And just like Paul Atrede's beloved Chani dying giving birth to twins, so too, must Padme die ... not for telling a good story, but because it was cherry picked out of a good story.

We already knew she died when the twins were babies in the OT. This is hardly stealing a story, death of a mother is not exactly a copyrighted theme.

One of the creepiest, eeriest moments in the entire Saga, bar none. I always get a chill when this scene plays, and even Anakin's tear rolling down his face as he begins to cry is effective.
