A&E Taking Heat For Suspending 'Duck Dynasty's' Phil Robertson

Is it displayed in obnoxious fashion as you walk into the store? I'd like to think I know my Walmarts after all these many years....selling popular and controversial merchandise in an obnoxious fashion and on big, gaudy displays as you stroll through the front doors is a ninja-level skill for many of them.

I was in Walmart just a few days ago but I didn't even think to pay attention for DD merchandise or displays. There might have been some set up in the highest-traffic areas of the store.

There were big displays right as soon you walked into the store, and there were a lot more over by the sporting goods section.
Yeppers. At least at the 4 Wal Marts around here, you walked in and *BAM* Duck Dynasty displays; clothes, figures, various bit of a briky-brack. One I was in the other day hasn't even scaled it back sense this shit-storm has hit; if anything I've think they've sold more of the junk.

Well, of course. When it comes to fundamentalist Christianity, nothing says Faith in Jesus™ like the Almighty Dollar. If you have lots of money, it means God is pleased with you, and if you have little, it means you have to have more faith, and that mean tithing (we'll just pass the plate around) and giving offering unto the Lord. We'll send you a prayer cloth as a token of our thanks, may it bless you and bring you the fruits of God's Love™.

When you side and sympathize with a loopy, rambling Charlie Sheen in any argument you know the opposing viewpoint has already lost.

Owned by Commander Tiger's Blood of the Cocaine and Hooker Legion. Epic.

Why on Earth were you in four different Wal Marts? Some sort of hillbilly scavenger hunt?

Yeah, I think a large and vocal portion of American Christians have flipped the story a little bit  Unless I missed something, and Jesus really was a massive money-whore that spit on the poor and nailed the gays to 2x4s.

No small amount of irony, that were Jesus around today, that most of the vocal American Christians would be calling for his head as being anti-American and anti-God.

:guffaw: :klingon::guffaw:Don't do that when a person's drinking hot coffee.

This from a Congressional candidate in a Republican primary here in Illinois:

On Friday, GOP congressional candidate Ian Bayne went all in, comparing [Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson] to civil rights icon Rosa Parks.
"In December 1955, Rosa Parks took a stand against an unjust societal persecution of black people, and in December 2013, Robertson took a stand against persecution of Christians," Bayne said in an email to supporters.

"What Parks did was courageous," he added. "What Mr. Robertson did was courageous too."
Because, sure, when we're discussing the waning days of the oppression of a minority by the group that's always had the power in this country, the bigots are Rosa Parks, and the group that historically has been persecuted are the racist white southerners. Um, yeah.

That whole argument of Mr Bayne's deserves a retort of superior quality.

Christmas shopping for the kids. We have 4 within 15 to 30 minutes drive of us. There's talk of building another, that'd put two of them within 4 or 5 miles of each other. Wal-Mart is like a fucking fastfood chain, anywhere they can cram one they will.

There are four Wally Worlds in my immediate area and that doesn't include the ones in surrounding towns and counties that you can reach with a relatively short drive. We also have a lot of Kmarts even though that chain's downsized and closed some stores in other parts of the country lately.

Oddly enough, just one Target within a forty-minute radius.

Yep. I may not be a Christian anymore, but I can appreciate the message Jesus tried to share with people, one which I believe has been largely ignored by those who loudly proclaim to know and love him best.

I know. I like K-mart and Target better than I do Wal-Mart, but it's to damn inconvenient to drive to them.

This holiday shopping this year has driven me to the point, that I'm just going to shop online, have it set for In-store & Same day pickup if I need something from Wal-Mart. Go in, pick it up, and leave.

Which is the shame. the underlying message is a good one, but the vocal minority of the people that claim to know the message have completely missed what the message is. At best, and it's stretching a bit to call it best, they're falling the Old Testament way of thinking and ignoring the changes that Jesus pushed for.

Agreed. If the loudest, most vocal fundamentalist Christians actually followed the teachings of Jesus, the world would be a much better place for everyone. Instead, we get what we see right now, and all they have are excuses. "We're not perfect, just forgiven."

Well, no, no you're not. Do you honestly think you're forgiven by the man who wants you to forgive your brother 70 times 7, and to offer up the other cheek when struck? The man who blesses the meek, the poor, the peacemakers? The same man who sat with the outcasts of society? These people are the ones Jesus railed against, the ones who profited from exploiting the weak and the poor. In our society, by these same people, they are venerated and celebrated. Jesus would have had sharp words for Phil Robertson, a man who is exceedingly wealthy, yet sharpens his tongue with those who cannot fight back.

See, this is what I mean by reframing the question. These same fundamentalists strike out, and when they experience pushback, they cry out that they are being oppressed. They are spiritual dullards, incapable of the simplest understanding of what Jesus meant when he spoke his Sermon on the Mount. So they change the focus, reframe the question. It becomes about their being persecuted just for speaking their faith, rather than on the knowledge that they struck first, in an attempt to judge those they deemed unfit to be in their presence. This is their country, you see, and we're here by their grace. They speak of love, light, and forgiveness, but they have become the empowered principalities and powers of which Jesus spoke against. They're just too blind and self assured in their own righteousness to see it.

When you see a fundamentalist Christian say that they are not perfect, they only mean in the eyes of God. When it comes to those lesser than themselves, they are still superior. It's in their hearts, and it's in their words, and it's in their actions, and people like Phil Robertson, and all those who support him, are living proof of that fact.

Note to conservatives: reactionaries will rarely ever be painted as civil rights icons

Wait? What? I thought this had been rumbled?

A&E pretended to deal to the problem because they were afraid of the left, which is when they got slammed by the right, who were too stupid to know what pretend is.

And all day today, A&E had been running the Ducks. Some suspension. I think they suck because they're hypocrites.

Indeed they are. If it turns out they put on this show to rile up the conservatives to drum up higher ratings, well than that's just about as low as you can get. I don't watch A&E at all, but if I did I would certainly stop after this debacle.

To be fair, programming is decided upon weeks in advance, and is contingent upon advertising. Advertisers pay different rates to be seen within different shows which have different demographics, which means they want the right sort of audience and as much as they can get, and if they pay for the Ducks and the Ducks are not delivered, first they can sue for their money back and damages, and then they can walk away to another network who doesn't lie to them.

A moral stand here could destroy their network.

Hypocrisy is too kind, that's more so about believing in two things and then doing one more than the other unexpectedly... This was just lying.

Although considering the word "suspension" was not defined, no one did really lie at all.

You know, in hearing how fans of the show are reacting and how merchandise around the show is selling out at Walmarts and I suspect Cracker Barrel re-stocked the merchandise due to pressure/backlash it's really....

It's just sad as it shows how far we have to go, really, when it comes to people understanding about speaking out in such a manner and how hurtful and judgmental it sounds.

Instead, it seems people have a really, really, fucked-up idea on what the First Amendment means. Jesus, why does this guy get so much support from people when he spoke out in such a hateful manner about an entire group of people?

IIRC The Bible speaks out against mixed-race marriages too but would people be as supportive if Phil spoke out against that in such a manner? "People who're in a mixed marriage won't inherit the Kingdom of God!"

God, this depresses me. It's more important that this guy gets to be on a TV show and gets to sell merchandise with his face on it than we live in a world that doesn't judge an entire group of people and compare them to those who commit bestiality simply because of whom they choose to love romantically.

Cause...'Murica!

It's hard to believe so much bandwidth is being waisted about this. A&E had every right to do what they did given that they employed this person - nuf said.
